Co-president, John Pribonic, opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and Dick Hall, Program Host followed with an invocation about thankfulness.
CELEBRATIONS:
Birthdays: Bonnie Housley's birthday is this Sunday and Lisa Toppin, will celebrate her's on Valentine's Day.
CONCERN:
The club was saddened to learn of the death of Tony Falcione, a charter member of our club. We observed a moment of silence in his honor and people paid tribute to his many kindnesses.
HAPPY BUCKS: Annette Oborn announced that there were 169 cans of coffee collected for the Haven of Rest. That is up from 115 cans last year. It was suggested that we go for 200 next year.
Annette also announced that her daughter, Allison, is selling Super Bowl Squares again this year They are only $10 each and benefit the Herren Project which helps families dealing with addiction. If you are interested in purchasing one, or some, contact Annette at 330-813-2059.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Board Meeting: Our board will meet this Friday, February 11 at 7:15 a.m. on zoom. Minutes of the January meeting are attached to these minutes.
Foodbank: Mary Dula told us that the photo that was to have accompanied our award from the Foodbank has not been rescheduled due to printing deadlines. Mary and Dinah Henderson have pulled pictures together from the past. It was decided that when the award is officially given, that John will offer a proclamation from the city and then make sure that the Stow Sentry and Beacon Journal are contacted to publish the information. This will take place some time in March. As for now, people should plan to volunteer at our next regular time which will be Wednesday, March 2 from 4:30-6:30. Let Mary know at 330-715-6358 if you plan to attend.
Interact: Dinah Henderson reported that the group has completed valentines for all of the residents of the assisted living locations.They are still collecting plastic caps that will be recycled into a bench for the Memorial Garden at the high school. They will accept them until the end of April. They already are having a huge response to the tabs they are collecting for Ronald McDonald House. And on February 23 Interact is sponsoring a blanket tie where they have 60 students making blankets for Ronald McDonald House.
Bulldog Bags: The next items needed are: individual sized cereals, Capri Sun, Band-aids and hand sanitizer. If you can drop your donations off in the lobby of City Hall by March 9, that would be great.
PROGRAM:
Dick Hall, Program Host, introduced Mark Treen, Assistant Principal at the high school and the leader of the Career Tech Programs. He said that the programs usage has increased 100% in the past seven years. Stow-Munroe Falls High School is now sending out over 200 students to other parts of the Six District Compact, while our school serves about 50 students. Mark then introduced Dave Helmick who talked with us about the Modern Manufacturing Program, housed at Stow-Munroe Falls.
Dave is the lead instructor in engineering aspects of the school, teaching three chemistry sections, and engineering physics. His idea of the manufacturing program brought no additional cost to the district. The program utilizes lots of polymerer contacts but others as well. The goal is to have students working in their senior year. They first learn skills such asa managing a checking accounting, budgeting, time management and work procedures such as the importance of attendance.
They have an apprenticeship relationship with Stark State. Dave received adjunct professor status so students can receive 2 college credits for their courses at the high school and then can keep a job and still attend more classes if they choose to. During this relationship they learn things like the principles of manufacturing, how to learn measuring tools, computer-aided design and eventually advanced machining and hand and power tools. All of this addresses companies' staffing needs. For the students, there are multiple shifts so they can leave school during their senior year, and get paid and get credits at the same time.

Dave had some additional fascinating information as to how car dealerships and METRO are looking at ways to help with the transportation aspect and needs of the program.
Jenny Stupica, Director of Manufacturing Engagement for Nexus of Ohio spoke briefly with us about how business is seeing the necessary shifts to trades through apprenticeships as being as valuable as a four-year college degree. Many companies are even paying for college where that is beneficial.
