PROGRAM:
Dick Hall, our Program Host kicked off Career Tech Month by introducing Chris Miloscia who is a Stow resident and 1987 graduate in physical therapy from The Ohio State University. After both running his own business and working for others, he is now with Summa and stationed at the Tallmadge Recreation Center.
He explained that this is a growing field that has seen many changes since it began by working with soldiers who were back home from World War I. At that time it was a female dominated career since so many men were in the service. It took until the 1950's for the program to become more formalized with more structured education and a Physical Therapy Association. It is now a doctoral program that requires 7 years of education. Core classes in the beginning include anatomy, physiology, psychology and chemistry. Chris explained that sometimes patients need a strong arm and sometimes they need a hugger.
Locally our Sixth District Compact hosts an Athletic Trainer/Sports Medicine component that can be a path toward physical therapy. Classes here can be where people are inspired to head toward that career goal. The physical therapy education is a mixture of classroom learning and clinical work under supervision. The clients may be post-surgery, have experienced sports injuries or strokes or really any other situation where their bodies need to be strengthened and or retrained. The goal is to figure out why the person has pain or lack of movement and then to treat it. The growing demand is to treat individuals using evidence-based services.
Annette ended the meeting by leading us in the Four-Way Test.
