After President, Gail Moseley opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, Dick Hall followed with the invocation.
Gail welcomed our visitors, Gale Stawiery, Wendy Waskovich, Tracey Lee, Manny Stegall, Mary Jane Stanchina and Sean Holt. She thanked Dave Renninger and Steve Dunton for getting everyone checked in this morning. She also said that we need someone else to help with sarge duties for next week. Brad Ruth volunteered.
CELEBRATIONS:
Birthdays: Eric Weber and Carrie Malotte are celebrating birthdays this week. Gale Stawiery is celebrating her birthday today, so Annette Oborn led us in singing to her.
RAFFLE; After the pot was won last week, we started over today. The President's table had the winning ticket but Andy Denton pulled the 2 of diamonds.
HAPPY BUCK: Mary Parr told us that the class she teaches at Kent State called Leisure Culture will take place in Florence, Italy in June. Anyone who registers for the class can join her there.
Mary also received her blue badge today after completing her blue sheet.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Golf Outing Committee: Scott Miller announced that the first meeting of the committee will be tomorrow evening from 6:00-7:00 at the FOP Lodge behind The Church in Silver Lake. The date for the outing is Friday, June 16.
QR Code: Annie Hanson Hilaire has been doing a great job of putting Rotary on Facebook. Today she provided a QR code so that all of the members can scan it and then like and follow our page. Be sure to send Annie any pictures of projects or events in order to create excitement about our club. Her e-mail is: ahanson29@gmail.com and her cell is 330-730-6424. Board Members: We will need three new board members beginning July 1. Please let Gail know if you are interested in having a position. It means attending one meeting a month. The next meeting is Friday, March 10 at 7:15 a.m. at City Hall if you want to see what a meeting is like.
Treasurer: Since Annette, who is our current treasurer will become President of the club as of July 1, we need a new treasurer. If you are willing, please let Gail or Brad Ruth know right away.
President-Elect: Our club also needs to have a president-elect for the 24-25 Rotary year. If you are interested, please talk with Gail about it.
Foodbank: Tonight is our time to volunteer at the Akron-Canton Foodbank from 4:30-6:30. We have several Rotarians signed up already and 14 Interact students will be coming so we will have a good crew.
The Easter Egg Hunt: will be on Saturday, April 1. Look for more information in the near future about how you can help.
Bulldog Bags: Items needed by March 8 are: Mac 'n Cheese cups, Capri Sun, band-aids, hand sanitizer, 32 oz. box of pancake mix and 24 oz of pancake syrup. Bring your donations to a meeting, or drop them off in the lobby of City Hall or at the library.
PROGRAM:
Dick Hall introduced the final program in this year's Career Tech Month and it was our own Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management housed at Stow-Munroe Falls High School. One of the teachers, Tracey Lee and three of her senior students, Tyler Hall, Manny Stegall and Sean Hult all presented information.
Ms. Lee explained that there are two levels of the program. Juniors learn about food production, hospitality fundamentals and earn certifications in various industry accomplishment. During their second year they do a lot of baking and they also learn about dining room services and more about food production.
Manny, who also plays tennis and will attend Grace College to specialize in Youth Ministry. He has been doing a lot of baking, including working on an order of 1,000 cupcakes. He states that he is grateful for the leadership skills that they have learned. Sean is working toward a career in culinary arts and will attend the Culinary Institute of American in New York after high school. He feels that the program at Stow has prepared him well and allowed him to create new recipes. Tyler said that the program really builds teamwork and helps people learn to rely on each other. He likes seeing people be so happy when they come in to eat. He plans on a career in film making.
As students are able to meet the goals they can receive certifications that will carry them through the restaurant industry, including permanent certification from the Ohio Department of Health. All students learn CPR and AED. They are funded through the schools through the Ohio Department of Education. Any profits they make at Joshua's help to meet their budget. They hope to have another fundraiser the last week in April, similar to what many Rotarians attended in December. The restaurant is usually open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00-1:00. In conclusion, Mary Jane Stanchina thanked the club for highlighting the programs of the Six District Compact. There will be a celebration next month to observe the 53rd anniversary of the Compact, the oldest in Ohio.
President, Gail led us in the Four-Way Test to conclude the meeting.
