Note below the change in meeting arrangements for the club:
Co-President Brad Ruth opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.  Bill Choler followed with an invocation about the value of a smile.

After Brad thanked Gail Moseley and Dave Renninger for getting us checked in this morning, he welcomed visitors Dave Henderson and our speaker, Michael Long.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Club Meetings: After an exhaustive search by a committee looking at meeting place options, the following decision has been made for the purposes of having a place that can accommodate the group. Recognizing that the virus is keeping some people from feeling comfortable attending the meetings and that the cost of breakfast has risen, while at the same time acknowledging the value of meeting in person, a compromise has been reached.  So, starting next Wednesday, September 1, our plan will be as follows.

On the first and third Wednesday of each month, we will meet in person at Silver Lake for a hot breakfast.  Cost per member will be $15 with the club subsidizing the other $3.00.  There will be eggs, breakfast meat, fruit and other usual breakfast entrees with cold cereal also being offered for those who prefer that.  The other weekly meetings will take place on Zoom.  This seemed to be the best decision that could be made at this time under these circumstances.  Thanks to the many committee people who worked on this for reaching the best solution for now.

Reverse Raffle Tickets  will be available starting next week.  The event will be Wednesday, October 13 at Guys Party Center.

Summer Sunset Blast:   The event will be September 4 and 5 at Silver Springs Park.  Workers are still needed.  Contact Steve Dunton at sdunton707@gmail.com if you can help.  Also, plan to buy your tickets next week and take some to sell to your friends and neighbors.  They are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00.

Football Books:  There are only 9 books left for the OSU Football Pool and the season is about to start.  Contact Pat Messmore at pat@messmoreagency.com to have him reserve a book for you.  Cost is $20.00.

Board Minutes:   The minutes of the August 13 Board Meeting are attached to these minutes.

Foodbank:  If you want to vounteer at the Foodbank next Wednesday, September 1 from 4:30-6:30, contact Mary Dula at 330-715-6358 to let her know you can help.

PROGRAM:
Program Host, Bill Choler, introduced Michael Long of the American Heart Association.  He is a graduate of Kent State University and has been with the Heart Association for almost 10 years.

Mike began by asking how many in the room had been affected in some way by heart disease, either personally or by association with a friend or family member.  Nearly every hand in the room was raised.  He explained that nationally the statistic is that 1 in every 3 people are affected in some way and that it still is the number one cause of death in this country.

Their programs have four areas of concentration:  Women and Children, Nutrition, Blood Pressure and E-Cigarettes and Vaping.  He also explained that we are fortunate to be in an area with such great medical facilities who have been the recipients of a lot of funding from the Heart Association.  One recent grant was a $2 million fund for COVID Research, both for the vaccine and other long term effects.  Much of the money they raise, stays in the community for efforts like these.

In a STEM initiative, girls in middle school are brought to an event each year at NEOMED to learn about science and research.  Another innovative project has been to do blood pressure readings in barber and beauty shops.  In the 5,000 screenings that were done, 60% of the readings were found to be high.  There is a teaching garden in a Firestone Park elementary school where the foods grown enhance good nutrition.

One of the big projects each year is the Heart Walk, which is the largest arm of the Heart Association.  This year it will take place at Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron.  It is free and open to the public.  There are both 3 mile and 1 mile runs.  Go to heart.org for more information.

JOKE:  Andy Denton gave this week's joke about a bar that serves drinks for only 10 cents.  Ask her about the rest of the joke.
Next week's joke will be by Scott Miller, our newest member.
