Introduction to Scottsbluff's Flyover Brewery

Today we welcome our two student guests. From Gering High we heard form Jayla Hardin who is a very busy senior. She plans to pursue her passion of working with children and study Child Psychology. Ian Papenfuss who is also active in his school and plans on studying pre-med. President West tanked those who helped with the Monument Marathon and the United Way Day of Caring. Both events were a success. Our program today are from Flyover Brewery; Andrea Margheim, one of the owners, and Derek Ordway, the brew master. Mrs. Margheim began, telling us that the brewery is on 17th and Broadway in Scottsbluff. It has been in the works for three years. At first the process was slow, with many sites selected which fell through. Then, the building owners at the current location were contacted and were interested in selling. There were setbacks. While remodeling the site, the roof collapsed while and this was a major setback. Thy hired Derek as the brew master, who began brewing prior to the opening in his basement so there would be beer at the opening. He is from Ft. Collins Colorado, and has experience brewing on the East coast. He spoke of some of the unique challenges western Nebraska has presented.  Water quality is not up to his standards, with such a high mineral content. So they have a commercial R.O. unit to purify the water and can duplicate waters from other areas, such as Germany or Colorado to improve the beers flavor. He grinds he grains he uses for the brews. Each batch of beer takes from two to six weeks to complete and must be served within 90 days. They have up to twelve taps so the goal is twelve beers on tap. His favorite is Oatmeal stout, which he has perfected over time and has won the bronze medal at competition. They plan on canning the beer in November.
