Update on Western Sugar

Today is our first meeting of the term where we do not have student guests. We wish all our former student guests luck with their upcoming graduations. Announcements included a reminder of the first upcoming Happy Hour on May 29th. Date is yet to be determined. We inducted our newest member, Kim Dale, Executive vice president of W.N.C.C.  She gave a brief background of herself after the induction.  She has been involved in higher education for 25 years, either teaching or administration. She was a professor in the business department. She and her husband have five children and enjoy biking and hiking.  Our program today is Jeff Kava, manager of the Scottsbluff Sugar Factory. Mr. Kava has been here one year and has spent his life in the processing end of the sugar industry. He came here from Minnesota, where he learned the business from the ground up. Beginning on the processing line, maintenance shift supervisor, and finally Factory manager. After a year of start and stop production at the Scottsbluff Factory, workers and management had low morale. Mr. Kava has worked through the line, recommending improvements and changes which have brought the plant up to a more predictable process. This past January through March, the plant produced a 56 ton per day slice rate. Mr. Kava feels this can improve with all that has been invested in the process so far.
