Scottsbluff High School Career Academies

We welcome our student guests; Payton Flower, from S.H.S., who hopes to study Ag. Marketing at U.N.L., and Tori Hoagland, from G.H.S., who plans on attending Central Community College playing softball, and study Secondary Education.   We welcome visiting Rotarians Dean Jackson and his guest Greg Cooper. Mr. Jackson is active in his Rotary club in Lehi Utah and was District 5420 Governor from 2007-08. They are in the area on business with the Cold Case Foundation. The program today is Justin Shaddick, who is the Assistant Principle of Career Education at Scottsbluff High. In wake of the completion of phase two of the high school renovation, Mr. Shaddick is here to explain the Career Academy program at the school. After speaking with a student attending the high school, it became clear that the students were not getting the guidance they needed to prepare for their future. From this discovery, the Career Academy program was developed. Students at S.H.S. begin their academic years taking pre academy classes. The goal is to expose them to different career paths. Beginning the third year, they select a career academy, taking academy classes the last two periods of the day. Some academy program offer dual credit classes with S.N.C.C. so students have a start on college. Other academies offer a more technical path, such as cosmetology and agriculture. This program has been well accepted by the students and the success rate has been favorable.
