This past Friday was a special day for the Rotary Club of Long Branch. Our very own Club Rotarian, Ted Friedli was given the prestigious Paul P. Harris Fellow Award by Rotary International District Governor, Joan Vas.
The Paul Harris Award was created in memory of Paul Harris who established the Rotary Club over 106 years ago and it is the highest award presented by the Club. Its’ purpose is to acknowledge the outstanding contribution and exceptional service of members of both the community and the club.
Ted truly represents Rotary’s motto of “Service above Self.” Several years ago, Ted started the non-profit group Kick Cancer Overboard, an organization that gives free cruises to people and their families whose lives have been forever altered by cancer.
Founder of the local travel agency Excel Travel here in Long Branch, Ted conceived an idea where a cruise ship would be filled with cancer fighters and survivors, their friends, family and supporters – all together celebrating life in a place where those touched by cancer can take a break for a few days.
As Governor Vas said as she gave Ted his award, “Ted is a real hero.” We could not agree more. Congratulations Ted!
We are just a month away from the 2nd Annual Rotary Club Art Show. The date is April 25th at 5:30 pm at Deal Country Club. Many of the area top artists will sell curated artwork with a portion of the proceeds going to the newly founded Karen Hansen Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The fund was established for area individuals who wish to pursue a career in Special Education. “ Karen taught Special Ed for almost 40 years, “ said Roger Hansen, Club Service Chair. “ That is a tremendous feat when you consider the "Burn-Out" rate of Special Ed teachers is about 5 years. Aside from the love she had for all her students, was the great satisfaction of watching them learn and grow through their seemingly insurmountable disabilities. Through the years she mentored many new teachers and convinced many to enter her very satisfying field. In this day and age we need more Special Education Professionals than ever before. Karen continually expressed the wish to some day be able to help those looking to enter this rewarding field thus, upon her passing, the members of our family created this Fund to help her reach this goal.” The evening will also feature Craft Beer and Wine Samplings from Shore Point Distributors, music from the guitar duo Tom and Tom, numerous raffle baskets, cold coffee samplings from Rook Coffee Roasters and much more.
