Summary of the Speaker Presentation:

www.Cancer101.com is a non-profit organization focused on Cancer Patient Advocacy. It was started 10 years ago in NYC.

Cancer101.com partners with patients, care givers and healthcare professionals to offer education and resources in 22 different types of cancer.

Cancer101.com’s main offering is their “Treatment Navigator” –  A binder, which offers a personalized education experience, tailored to different factors in their situation, for instance, age, type of cancer, stage of cancer, etc. The Treatment Navigator provides information on their diagnosis, treatment options, how to talk to your healthcare provider, how to manage the insurance process, along with an area to track your journey from diagnosis to treatment to resolution.

The Treatment Navigators are distributor to patients by their healthcare provider, so they can understand risks and benefits of treatments, treatment pathways – it offers a way for the healthcare provider and the patient can engage in an informative discussion, so the patient can feel empowered.

Cancer101.com also partners with other organizations, such as NYU Medical Center and Sloan Kettering, to help patients with their treatment journey – teaching healthcare providers how to educate patients, as well as to keep their educational materials up to date as cancer treatment research evolves.

Cancer101.com is committed to patient outreach and continue to expand their offerings to cover wellness, prevention and early screening. Their emphasis is on the importance of healthcare providers engaging with their patients before, during and after diagnosis.

100k+ Treatment Navigators are being distributed per year – but it could be more, if the infrastructure was in place. Cancer101.com needs funding to help them continue to grow their offering – both in the US and Worldwide.

Because patients learn in different ways, Cancer101.com is looking to expand their online offerings, but market research shows that many patients still prefer the tangible, hard copy Treatment Navigator binder.

Additional efforts include, translation of Treatment Navigator binders into other languages and cultures, with a special pilot being currently worked on for the Hispanic population.

Also, a version of the Navigator, that reaches the cancer survivor population.

Special events include an upcoming gathering in Asbury Park, which will allow family and friends to write letters to their loved ones, and attach them to Japanese lanterns that will be released into the water. Another event will be a global event, which will allow patients from across the world to communicate with other patients and share their experiences and journeys.

Another resource that Cancer101.com is utilizing is the, Med Starter program, which allows people within the cancer community (and outside this community), to set up a goal online, with specific details on how they plan to reach their goal and the amount of funding required for their plan. They are able to upload a video with the details, and either individuals or corporations can provide funding to those goals. Once the goal is achieved, the funders will receive a letter advising them that the goal has been reached and provides them a tax deduction.

In the future, the Managing Directors of Cancer101.com would like to expand their patient education and advocacy to encompass other diseases, including rare diseases and main stream diseases such as Diabetes.
