Mission statement:

American Students Opening New Eyes (As One) is a nonprofit and nongovernmental organization that works to help the sustainable development of communities suffering from HIV/AIDS at a global scale. Currently, our focus is on Luweero, Uganda, located in southern Africa. In the slums of Luweero, there is a large group of women who make handmade beads out of strips of recycled paper. As One practices fair trade by selling the jewelry and giving all the profits back to the women to help pay for their HIV/AIDS medication, rent, and their children's education.

Situation
People around the world suffer from HIV/AIDS. In the United States alone, an estimated 1,106,400 persons (95% confidence interval 1,056,400-1,156,400) were living with HIV infection, with 21% undiagnosed in 2006. These statistics keep rising as health care policies increase and less Americans can afford medications and insurance. Most cases of HIV/AIDS occur in Africa. Alone, in Uganda, there are currently an estimated 940,000 people living with HIV, and a further 1.2 million children who have been orphaned by AIDS1. These statsitics pose as a major threat to the well-being of Africans as well as Americans.

Goals
1. To ensure medication and care for HIV/AIDS infected patients.
2. Help prevent spread of HIV/AIDS by promoting sustainable development projects
3. Raise awareness in community and globe.
Current projects
1. Selling jewelry: Go to various community events to sell jewelry.
2. Microfinance program: Nobel Prize winner, Muhammed Yunus introduced this concept in which small loans are given to people suffering from poverty who can start their own businesses.
3. Website: To help advertise and relay information about As One's upcoming events and projects

Future projects:
1. Housing project: create a housing project in which people would have to pay a very small fee for rent and allow a safer and promising environment for the people.
