From your new district governor: Happy New Year in July!

Happy New Year!

As we "ring in" the new Rotary year together, I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to visit with each of your clubs in the weeks ahead!

Together we will re-discovery Rotary. And all we have to offer to our members, our local community and our global community, too!

2016-2017 marks the Centennial year of our Rotary Foundation -- a chance to celebrate, and a reason to increase our support of all that Rotary does locally and worldwide! I join Rotary International President John Germ, of Chattanooga, Tenn., in proudly celebrating what we do while continuously challenging ourselves to do even more. Thus this year's International theme: ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY!

District Governor Scott Shore installed for 2016-17

Three years of leadership! Seated: Linda Nelson, Jan and Steve Kuhn; Standing: Jim Nelson, Scott and Adriane Shore

With the theme "Let Rotary's Good Times Roll....!", District Governor Scott Shore was installed June 26 at Wise Guys Banquet Center in Princeton, Illinois.

Over 100 attended and enjoyed Chef Jeff's Sunday Brunch buffet, great fellowship and the opportunity to watch as the gavel passed through the hands of 14 past district governors who each in turn recounted their own themes and RI Presidents.

Included in the installation ceremony were District Vice Governor and PDG Shannon Scheffel of Loves Park Rotary, District Governor Elect Steve Kuhn of Sycamore Rotary and District Governor Nominee Kathy Kwiat-Hess of Rockford Rotary.

Following district tradition, the new DG was also called upon to install the new Board and Officers of his home Club, Putnam County Rotary, whose members hosted the event.

Also honoring tradition, Immediate Past District Governor Jim Nelson's home Club Past President Russ Johansson of Rockford Rotary presented incoming PC Rotary President Randy Borio with the traveling "Home Club of The District Governor" banner for display at PC Rotary meetings this year.

Scott and Adriane seized the opportunity to recognize one of PC Rotary's finest, and most "vintage" member, Darrell Alleman, whose contributions to the club have included service as Youth Exchange Officer through some 13 years and 28 inbound and outbound full-year Exchange Students, attendance at several International Conventions world-wide, and consummate volunteer in nearly every PC Rotary project, sometimes of his own creation.

Putnam County Rotarian Darrell Alleman

Such was the case when Darrell built a Field of Dreams on his farm, for free use by children and adults alike, and suggested three years ago that Rotary sponsor a Field of Dreams Night for all the children and ball teams in the county, to which he would invite one of the original ball players from the movie.

Darrell proved that if you build it, they will come, and they did -- eight of the original cast ghost players, in full 1919 uniform, and they have come each year since.

Bangladesh terrorism hits close to home

Rebecca Arnold, former member of the Rock Island Rotary Club, is a Family Health Educator in Bangladesh, where she resides with her son.

Although she was home visiting her parents in Rock Island at the time of the recent hostage crisis in Bangladesh, she shared the following insight: "We are safe in the US. but quite shaken up. That restaurant is not far from our apartment, and I usaually go there about once a week.  The 3 college students that were among the slain hostages had all graduated from the school my son's attends back in 2015. I fly back to Bangladesh on July 18th - as long as the situation is tenable."

Twenty-two people and six terrorists died after a 10-hour siege July 2 inside a restaurant in Bangladesh's capital.

Newspaper accounts state that the victims were given a test: recite verses from the Quran or be punished. Those who passed were allowed to eat. Those who failed were tortured and slain.

Rebecca continues her association with Rotary as a member of Eclub One in Colorado. Please keep Rebecca and her son in your thoughts and prayers.

Rock Falls Rotary celebrates 80 years

The Rock Falls Rotary Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with an invitation to all Past Presidents to come to celebrate and share the history of their presidencies.

Rock Falls Rotary was founded June 6, 1936. Rotary Clubs served as the Chamber of Commerce at that time and included the city fathers and business owners in Rock Falls.

Those who shared their year as a Rock Falls Rotary President included the following from left to right:
Julie Logan 2015 – 2016; Bob Sondgeroth 2008-2009 and 2013 – 2014; Pat Novak 2001 – 2002 and 20003 – 2004; Mark Young 2000-2001; Mike Albert 1998-1999; Pam Erby 1995-1996 and 2014 – 2015; David Blanton 1996 – 1997; Betty Clementz 1997 – 1998; Joe Wetzell 1991-1992; Bill Wescott 1986 – 1987; Glen Kuhlemier 1977 – 1978; and Carl Gates 1974 – 1975.

Foundation, making great things possible

Ruth Lee, new Foundation Committee Chair

Every good building, every family, every successful business or organization must be built on a strong foundation in order to survive and thrive.

The same is true of The Rotary Foundation and District 6420’s Foundation team. With a bit of trepidation, I have taken over the position of District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair (DRFCC) effective July 1.

At this time, I want to express my personal appreciation and the appreciation of all Rotarians in our District to outgoing DRFCC Elise Cadigan (below). She led us through the treacherous waters of Future Vision and the new Rotary Foundation strategy for managing grants. She has served tirelessly within her club (Rockford), the district (6420), and The Rotary Foundation itself. She will continue to be very involved both here and at The Rotary Foundation for the benefit of all of us. Thank you, Elise!

Looking to the future, we have many opportunities. We have a great team in place (thank you to everyone). We are launching a new major gifts and endowment initiative. More on that to come. I am planning to establish a plan for regular communication among the Foundation leadership members in the district. Hope to work on that while I’m in Montana during July.

Northern Winnebago County club sponsors 4-H awards

The Northern Winnebago County Rotary Club is again sponsoring two 4-H awards at the Winnebago County Fair this year.

We sponsor the award for Poultry Grand Champion overall pair-pen of chickens and Visual arts champion computer-generated art.

We also participate in the fur & feather auction. This is where the 4-H members sell their animals from the current fair year to help fund their projects for the next fair year. Last year we purchased a rabbit from 4-H member Stephanie Graupner shown in the pictures above. We then donated it back to her to be auctioned off to raise funds for the Winnebago County Fair Association.
