DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S MESSAGE
By Joanne Croghan, District 5020 Governor (2016-17)

This Rotary year is whizzing by at a very fast pace.  The first half of the year Don and I visited many of you at your club or at a meeting where you joined with other clubs in your area.  It was heartwarming to see all that the clubs in District 5020 are doing.

We are now busy attending many of the wonderful celebrations that are planned throughout the District to commemorate the 100th anniversary of our Rotary foundation.  Our top rated Rotary Foundation is doing more good throughout the world than the originators could ever have imagined thanks to the generosity of Rotarians and friends.

PUYALLUP ROTARY PROVIDES WATER FOR ORPHANS
By Timothy, Chuck Valley, and Adam Williams
Photos Provided By Timothy, LFO Orphanage

When militants repeatedly kidnapped and ransomed the leaders of the LFO Orphanage in Northern Manipur, the message became clear: It was time to move the children to safety.

Chuck Valley, Executive Director of Kidstown International and Puyallup Rotarian, connected the Puyallup Rotary Club to the orphanage where nine children who have lost both parents are housed and fed.

PORT ORCHARD ROTARY'S CLEAN WATER INNOVATION
By Bob Cairns, Rotary Club of Port Orchard

One of the major problems in providing clean water in Africa is keeping boreholes operative. In East Pokot, Kenya, 90% of the boreholes are not operative because of a lack of maintenance.

The Port Orchard Rotary Club in Aug and Dec 2016, enacted 2 major clean water projects, a rainwater harvesting system and a sand dam, that are theoretically sustainable forever.

Both systems work on gravity alone and thus no maintenance is required.  Additionally, these clean water projects avoid the problem of chemical contamination from boreholes drilled into the volcanic rocks of the Great Rift Valley.

LOVE CONQUERS ALL EXCEPT POVERTY AND TOOTHACHE
By Karen Morgan, Rotary Club of Sidney-by-the-Sea

This story starts with a retired School Principal and a dentist.  In talking about how dental problems can handicap children and teens, not only at school and at home, but throughout their lives, the two realized that they needed to do something.

They did further research and discovered that we have children in our community whose parents earn enough to make them ineligible for government assistance.  And we all know that rent and groceries come first.
