New Rotary Vision Statement. At its recent meeting in Atlanta, the RI Board of Directors adopted a new vision statement: "Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves."
New Membership Chair. I am extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Corey Lopardi as Membership Chair for District 5020, effective December 15, 2017. Corey is past president of Hawks Prairie Rotary, a PNW PETS training leader, and has been serving as District newsletter editor. District 5020 has another new Rotary Club, and it’s a first. Although the idea of an E-Club was first envisioned by Past District Governor (PDG) Bob Martin in 2010, the 2016 Council on Legislation (COL) provided the flexibility to make it a reality. The COL drastically changed Rotary rules regarding flexibility, attendance, membership types, and classification. Just as we are discussing how to attract and retain “young” and busy Rotarians, we also need to bring former Rotarians back to our world of Service. We know many former and prospective Rotarians have careers that simply do not allow for a regimented schedule. “The Rotary E-Club of District 5020 International” is one option to meet that need. Although the Club is District 5020 based, the Club can accept members from around the world. The club hopes to reach former District 5020 Rotarians who may have moved of the District but wish to stay connected to their Rotary roots.
In the last few years, Rotary made a conscious decision to switch from the blue/gold legacy Rotary logo to one which explicitly had the Rotary name alongside the Rotary wheel. While the legacy logo did say ‘Rotary International’ inside the wheel, feedback suggested that this was hard to read. In turn, this meant that Rotary’s involvement in projects might not be getting the attention they deserved.
If your Rotary club is still using the blue/gold legacy logo on promotional material, you should start switching to using the new Rotary logo. Clubs should all be using the same logos so Rotary’s successes around the world can be associated with each individual Rotary club. This helps potential members have a better idea about what Rotary is when we have a strong and unified brand.

On December 8, 2017, Rosie’s Bus accompanied by an ambulance arrived in El Tuito, Mexico. This was after a wonderful stop in Fresno, CA where the hospitality was warm from the Fig Garden Club and $500 was donated. The vehicles were officially donated to the community in a ceremony which included some wonderful traditional stomp dancing. The drivers included: (Strathcona Sunrise)—Bayne Mann, Ryan Friesen, Patrick Johnson and Andy Toporchak; (Cumberland Centennial)—Keith Tatton; (Twin Cities)—Leon Bowman, Mike Crouse and Larry McGee. The final driver was very important to our journey. Ignacio Palomera, El Tuito Rotary, flew up so he could ride with us on the 2,700 mile drive from Chehalis. The ambulance, starting in Courtenay, went even farther, 3,000 miles.
The story begins several years ago when the Strathcona Sunrise, Cumberland Centennial, Qualicum Beach and Tumwater Rotary Clubs of 5020 began projects in the El Tuito area. This beautiful area in Jalisco State is an hour south of Puerto Vallarta. With many modest villages, past projects have included public bathrooms, teacherages and donated vehicles.
I have really enjoyed being the District 5020 Newsletter Editor for the last six months, but I am truly honored to be your new District Membership Chair. Our district is one of the largest in the world, and I am looking forward to meeting so many great Rotarians and helping them to engage others in Rotary.
One of my first tasks as your new District Membership Chair is to put together a District Membership Team. These wonderful Rotarians, who answer the call, will be helping me to reach out to every club in the district and provide them with the tools and training to attract, engage, inspire and retain members in their clubs. If you would like to help in this effort I would love to hear from you.
The purpose of the Rotaract Outstanding Project Awards is to recognize exceptional community or international service projects that further focus and increase the humanitarian service goals of Rotary International.
Selection Process:
Each online nomination form must be submitted by 1 February 2018. Awards will be granted to one winner in each of the designated regions. Awards will also be granted to international winners for projects submitted by a single club, projects submitted by more than one club or an entire Rotary district, and multi-district projects. We encourage clubs, districts, and multi-districts to work together to maximize their impact and increase collaboration, however each Rotaract club, district, or multi-district may submit only one project for consideration each year. Winners will be announced at the Rotaract Preconvention Meeting. Projects that took place from 1 February 2017 through 31 January 2018 are eligible for consideration. Rotaract clubs that have received an award in previous years are still eligible to receive an award again.
Project submissions will be evaluated in 5 specific areas that are listed on the nomination form.
