Australia

AUSTRALIA DAY AT GLENBROOK WILL BE BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!

A genuine Tug O War competition, the 11th Australian Gnome Convention, Fairies in the Garden, first class musical entertainment, an amazing variety of delicious foods, and exciting new entertainment activities means that Glenbrook Park is the place to be for Blue Mountains and Penrith residents on Australia Day, 2015.

Exciting plans have been finalised by the  Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains’ organising committee this week when it was decided that invitations should be extended to Police, Fire Brigade members, State Emergency Service volunteers, and Ambulance drivers to take part in a four way Tug O War competition – under rules applied to such competitions in the early days of the colony.

The ever popular Australian Gnome Convention (now in its 11th year) will again offer unique entertainment for holiday school students with another ‘Golden Gnome Search’ in Glenbrook Village shops – and a special competition for the real life ‘Best Dressed Gnome’ in attendance.  For the past 10 years (2015 makes it 11) the Gnome Convention has been held on Australia Day in Glenbrook Park, Glenbrook, Blue Mountains, NSW. This 'bit of' fun' has grown over the years and has attracted gnomes from far and wide, television news teams, including 'Better Homes and Gardens' and has a world-wide following! Bring your garden gnomes along to enjoy the day with the other gnomes!!!    You could dress them up!  Give them a new coat of paint!

With annual crowds varying from 6,000 to 8,000 people, the Glenbrook Park celebrations are now firmly established as the best Australia Event in the Mountains.

Lower Blue Mountains Rotary organisers are constantly searching for new attractions and have already locked in some exciting attractions for young people in 2015 –

  • ‘The Wild Ride’ – featuring joy rides on motorised trikes.
  • Mobile Slot Cars.
  • The Police Citizens Youth Club interactive trailer complete with state of the art electronic games.
  • Blue Mountains Vintage Car Club vehicles – complimented by a unique collection of historic NSW Police vehicles and Torana Car Club vehicle.
  • The very popular Blue Mugs Ukulele Group; and the Blaxland High School ‘Billies’ – to name just a couple of outstanding entertainment highlights.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Lower Blue Mountains Rotary President Dave Clark has made a special request to citizens of the Lower Mountains community to ‘join the fun’ and assist with the planning and conduct of Australia Day 2015 as volunteers.

‘We have a wonderful Rotary Club of almost 60 members but there is always plenty to do with such a major community event a couple of days before and on January 26,’ he said. ‘Response from community volunteers has been very pleasing in recent years with some 10 to 15 people offering support – and some have enjoyed the experience so much that they have subsequently joined the club!’

Anyone prepared to assist should call President Dave on 0414 364 812, or planning coordinator PDG John Wakefield on 0418 411 449.
