Schools in Haiti were originally scheduled to begin the new school year on September 6. Now, intense efforts are underway to clear the ruins of more than 170 schools that were totally destroyed and begin the structural repairs of the more than 270 that were severely damaged. The new back-to-school date is October 4. This means that the children, teachers, and parents of the Southern communities affected by the earthquake will need support, soon, for school supplies for children and teachers and refurbishing inventory for the classrooms. Although schools are trying to save whatever furniture and materials can be saved by placing them under tents to protect the inventory from the rain, a lot of the furnishings will have to be replaced. It will take some time before schools are fully ready. Some schools will be offering classes under tents placed in their sports field. The Projects sub-Committee is finalizing the details of the application to begin submitting pledges for the different projects that will be available to support or undertake a school project as a main contributor. In the meantime, Rotarians can begin prioritizing funds and, if necessary, conduct additional fundraising activities. The funding to provide support will be required soon.
