District 5370 is holding a “Virtual Run for Polio” fundraising event in early September in partnership with the Running Room. The Running Room has retail outlets in all Canadian provinces as well as Hawaii and Minnesota. Hopefully, this partnership will grow into a significant fundraising opportunity for Rotary.

The relationship began when Rotary member Raemonde Bezaner, who plans charity runs with The Running Room suggested a Virtual Fundraising Run to her Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview. When the club shared their plans with 2020-21 District Governor Elect, Donna Barrett jumped on the idea of making it a district wide event.

DG Donna said, “I was looking for an inexpensive activity early in the Rotary year that all clubs could participate in, an event with no barriers, which would still be Covid-19 friendly and that would also qualify for Rotary Days of Service. There is no better service in Rotary that raising awareness and funds for our number #1 humanitarian effort.

The 5K and 10K Fun Run/Walk to raise funds to eradicate polio is a Rotary Days of Service Project,  co-sponsored by the Rotary District of 5370 and the Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview.

Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors and others are encouraged to sign up to complete their virtual 5K or 10K walk or run any time between September 11 and 19.

The Running Room looks after all of the registration and the logistics, while the clubs promote the event to their members.  Registration for adults is $35.00 and $15.00 for children. Participants and others also have an opportunity to donate. Clubs and districts will be recognized for donations by Rotary International and tax receipts will be issued.

The company organizes hundreds of charity runs each year and has received numerous national awards for its retail and business operations and for its contribution to fitness and health.

DG Donna hopes the relationship between Rotary and the Running Room which is starting this year will grow into a significant Polio fundraising event for all of the districts in Zone 28.
