Art Heyman, Oceanside’s most renowned athlete, led the Sailors to the County Championship in 1959. He attended Duke University, and is credited with being the first superstar in modern Blue Devil history. Heyman is one of three athletes in ACC history to have been elected unanimously to the All-ACC Men's Basketball team three times.
In 1963 Art was the first draft pick in the NBA draft, selected by his hometown New York Knicks. Heyman averaged over 15 points a game his rookie year, and was named to the NBA’s All Rookie team.
His untimely death in 2012, at the age of 71, led the Oceanside Rotary Club to recast its annual Tip Off Classic in his honor, and the Art Heyman Memorial Tip Off Classic was born. We hope you will join us, in Art’s memory, to raise money for scholarships for Oceanside and Long Beach High School seniors.
