Our District 5890 inbound exchange students, accompanied by 13 Rotarians and spouses and 2 senior Rotex students, attended the annual South Central Rotary Youth Exchange (SCRYE) conference in Tulsa March 5-7, 2010.  District Governor Elect Sunny Sharma, his wife Rashmi, and District Governor Nominee Rhonda Walls-Kerby enjoyed the week-end with us.  We were the #1 district represented at the conference, and our district received three awards from SCRYE:

a.       District of the Year
b.       District Growth award (based on statistics of increasing numbers of students and Rotarians involved)
c.       Gary Aguren, representing the Willowbrook Rotary Club, won the "Sparkplug" award for his clubs  efforts and leadership for recruiting outbound students

Also Ruby Powers and David Lichte – 2 Rotex students on our district committee – gave outstanding presentations at the Saturday luncheon on how Rotary has contributed to their young lives.

The students enjoyed home hosting on Friday night and attended an overnight locking party on Saturday night.  Rotarians retrieved training during the day and enjoyed one anothers company over the week-end.  On Saturday night, everyone attended the banquet.  Following the meal, the students entertained "by country".  Each country presented a 3 minute skit.

At the end, the Youth Exchange choir sang "Let There Be Peace on Earth" with the audience joining in for a second time through this beautiful song.  Then the choir sang "We Are One".  Everyone was excited about what we learned, about being together and sharing stories, and about what we can do now to further improve our Rotary Youth Exchange program in our districts.

Our District 5890 Rotary Youth Exchange committee is most appreciative of the support from the Rotary clubs who over the past 20 years have done so much for the students and for our program.  And since we always have the reputation for asking for help, we are looking for 3 more host clubs for the 2010 – 2011 Rotary year.  Contact a member of the district committee if you wish more information.
