ENDING HUMAN TRAFFICKING STARTS WITH OUR TEACHERS Rotary Club of Community Action Against Human Trafficking (CAAHT) is hosting a virtual event, “Human Trafficking Summit: Educators Role in Preventing Human Trafficking,” on Saturday April 10, 2021 from 9:00AM-12:00PM (CT). Human trafficking is prevalent everywhere, often unreported, and many victims are under 18 years old. Educators build trusting relationships with students. Usha Reddi, President of Rotary Club of Community Action Against Human Trafficking (CAAHT) stated, “Educators are uniquely positioned to teach children to recognize human trafficking dangers and how to seek help if they find themselves or others in traumatic situations.” The event is for school board members, administrators, school counselors, teachers, student teachers, teacher training program administrators, before and after school program directors, parents and anyone involved in education. The event spotlights two groups of panelists with a focus on legislation, social media, school resources, and curriculum. The event is sponsored by Kansas Association of School Boards, Kansas National Education Association and MB PILAND. Registration is required. Go to Rotary CAAHT and register today. |

From the District's Disaster Relief CommitteeHEART TO HEART INTERNATIONAL’S EFFORTS IN NEPAL
The death toll in Nepal has surpassed 4,000. Thousands more are injured and unaccounted for. The 7.8 magnitude quake was powerful enough to rock the Himalayas, causing avalanches on Mt. Everest, killing climbers. In the capital city of Kathmandu, homes and historic cultural structures have collapsed, burying people. There have been multiple powerful aftershocks. The devastation in surrounding villages is even more dire.
I saw firsthand the destruction in the wake of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. I tasted the dust, heard the cries and smelled the stench. It was terrible and wrenching and was one of the most impactful things I have ever done. The world's response helped keep the situation in Haiti from becoming even worse than it was. Now, the people of Nepal face a terrible situation that can only be addressed with outside help.
Heart to Heart International is mounting a response. Heart to Heart, started by the Rotarian Gary Morsch at an Olathe Rotary Club meeting, has an advance team en route to Kathmandu. Heart to Heart responding as with previous disasters in Haiti, Joplin, the Philippines and others has a medical team which will follow shortly. They are coordinating with partners on the ground to provide large shipments of needed medical aid and supplies for the responders and survivors. With the people of Nepal, Heart to Heart will embody the Rotary motto that was it's birthright, Service Above Self.
You can support Heart to Heart’s efforts to aid the Nepalese people by donating at http://www.hearttoheart.org.

SUMMER LEWIS - WORLD PEACE FOLLOW IN AUSTRALIA"MARVELOUS MELBOURNE" Kat [Summer's sister] and I returned to Brissy (pronounced “bri-zee”) at the end of June after a lovely week in Sydney. I had to finish just one more (grrrrr) paper (done now, grade not yet known) and we had quite a bit of laundry to do. Plus we had to figure out where we were off to next. We knew we were going to Melbourne (pronounced “mel-ben”), and we wanted to also go to Cairns (pronounced “cans”). Usually I’m the one in our duo who does the travel planning, but writing about globalization for weeks on end had muddled my globe trotting skills. So Kat and I found a lovely travel agent at the chain travel agency, Flight Centre, and booked our trip from Brisbane to Melbourne to Cairns, then back to Brisbane (pronounced “bris-ben”). |
