Annual Rotary Veterans Day Luncheon
On Tuesday November 14th, the Orrville Rotary Club hosted its annual Veterans Day Luncheon at Schmid Hall in Orrville. Veterans from the Army, Navy, Airforce, and Marines gathered together with local Rotarians to enjoy a lovely lunch, sponsored by Aultman Orrville Hospital, and hear a great presentation from the MAPS Air Museum. With 22 Veterans in attendance, stories were told by the young and old of their times in the United States Military. Some shared laughs, and others shared hard ships, but all were celebrated for their heroism and dedication to serving our country.
The MAPS Air Museum is located in North Canton, Ohio where they display around 60 airplanes along with some tributes to local Veterans. MAPS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and runs mostly off of volunteers and their work. The MAPS presenter described a number of displays they have, while also telling the stories that go along with them. They want their visitors to know that the planes are more than just pieces of metal, they are stories about the people who built them and flew them. He began with a story about William Martin, and the Martin Glider. Martin began his fascination with planes as a child when he started building model airplanes. Then, in 1908 he built his first airplane, and in January of 1909 he was able to take it on its first flight. He was able to travel at a height of 25 feet for a length of 250 feet, about 19 times. That plane is now on display at the Museum and is a great representation of planes and their stories.
