Rails to Trails Update
Did you know? According to its website "Rails to Trails of Wayne County is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, development and conversion of unused railroad and greenway corridors into multi-purpose, non-motorized, public paths. We are comprised of local volunteers with the common interests for enjoying trails in many different forms including bicycling, walking, running, roller-blading, and horseback riding. We inspire movement!" With the foregoing being noted, Rotarian Becky Jewell, years-long avid cyclist, RTWC volunteer and current board member, brought club members "up to speed" concerning the the current trails' status and proposed new RTWC paths. Jewell explained and identified existing completed trailways that include the local nearby four mile route from Orrville to Marshallville. She also informed Rotarians of the The Rockies section and "Gap" sections which need to be completed from Allen Avenue to Forrer Road, a trail section which, in partnership with the city of Orrville and ODOT, funding is yet to be completed. As RTWC is proudly part of the National Great American Rail Trail which runs from Washington D.C. to Washington State. Jewell pointed out that RTWC is a 100% volunteer entity with trail maintenance that includes, among other tasks, mowing and trimming, creating and maintaining flowerbeds and wildflowers, removing downed trees and clearing ditches of debris.
