Let's Make Change and End Polio

World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.  Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus, developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988.  Since then, cases have been reduced by 99.9%.  Today, only three countries remain endemic:  Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

World Polio Day is October 24, 2017.  To help contribute towards ending polio once and for all, our club is hosting a loose change fundraiser for the entire month of October.  At every Howland Rotary Club event during the month of October, the "Change for Good" loose change jar will be there to collect any silver and copper coin you find in your car, your pockets, in your couch cushions, your change purses or any where else it sits idle (the jar will accept paper currency too).  Let's help make a difference in the world and end polio now!

Rotary Helps Disaster Victims

The Rotary Foundation and Rotary clubs are helping bring emergency aid to communities battered by severe weather and earthquakes.

The Rotary Foundation is collecting emergency relief funds to help victims of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, and the two powerful earthquakes hit Mexico, destroying buildings and highways, and killing hundreds of people.

The Puerto Rico Recovery fund was established with a $1 million gift from the Murray Family Foundation with hopes that it will be matched by Rotarians and friends.

The Rotary Foundation has established four special funds to collect donations to help victims rebuild, and Rotary club members continue to work on the ground to bring relief in their communities.

Rotary's partner, ShelterBox, is providing support to families displaced by the storms.

If you have questions about how you can help, contact relief@rotary.org. To see how clubs are helping, go to Rotary Ideas.
