The Honorable Tony Whitford, who has been a member of our Club for a number of years, spoke today on his role as Commissioner of the Northwest Territories.

Tony has been active in the NWT for his entire life.  Having grown up here and learned the trade of mechanic as his first venture, he has gone to many parts of the NWT and learned the culture of that area.  He has held the positions in the the Legislative Assembly as an MLA, as the Speaker of the House, as Deputy Commissioner and now as the Commissioner for the NWT (a 3 year term).

Tony enjoys the travelling he gets to do with the job he is in. He says he gets to visit most of the communities and participate in their big functions, such as opening of schools or honoring different elders in the community.

His states that in being the 15th Commissioner of the NWT it is his goal to visit all 33 schools in the NWT. So far he has visited 26.  Another item he spoke about was the Commissioner's Awards for Excellence and Bravery. He is hoping that this year he will be able to honor someone in the NWT for those areas, something that has not been done for a number of years.

The Yellowknife Rotary Club would like to thank Tony for all of his support as a member of our club and in his role with our government. Keep up the good work, and the really bad jokes Tony!!
