YELLOWKNIFE, JUNE 19, 2008: The Yellowknife Rotary Club is pleased to announce the winner of the Don Cardinal Art Scholarship for 2008 is Yellowknife resident Roya Yazdanmehr. This annual $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who is graduating from either %cole Sir John Franklin High School or %cole St. Patrick High School, who has completed Art 30, and has been accepted into a recognized post-secondary art or design programme. This year, four aspiring artists applied and presented their works to a panel of judges. The students were: Roya Yazdanmehr, Brayden Pitt, Meaghan Arthur and Ryan Dempster. Each student was judged on Medium, Composition, Appeal to Viewer and Presentation. The judging panel consisted of Rotary members as well as some local art experts. Rotarian Peter Vician, who chairs the Don Cardinal Scholarship Committee says, "The works presented by the students in this year's competition were outstanding, and choosing just one winner was especially difficult." Special thanks go to Betty Wilcox at %cole Sir John Franklin for arranging the judging session and encouraging students to apply. As a special treat for Yellowknife residents and visitors, Lisa Seagrave from the Gallery of the Midnight Sun will showcase selected pieces by the students at her gallery starting this Saturday (June 21st) for one week. Please visit the gallery to see the incredible talent these four young people demonstrate through their pieces, and enjoy their inspirational works.
