Stories
Celebrate with us in Atlanta

This year's Rotary International Convention is being held in Atlanta, Georgia, from June 10 to June 14.  Rotarians from around the world will be convening to share stories, learn about youth programs, exchange ideas about peace and conflict resolution and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation.  I looks to be a very festive occasion.

For more information visit the Rotary International Convention website.

Rotary International Theme for 2017-18
In 2017-18, we’ll answer the question “What is Rotary?” with RI President-elect Ian H.S. Riseley’s theme, Rotary: Making a Difference. “Whether we’re building a new playground or a new school, improving medical care or sanitation, training conflict mediators or midwives, we know that the work we do will change people’s lives — in ways large and small — for the better.”
February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution month
The month of February is very special in the Rotary calendar since it is designated Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution (formerly World Understanding) Month.

Participation Ideas:
  • Offer support to marginalized groups that are at risk of violence or persecution.
  • Identify triggering or accelerating factors in the conflict and work to mitigate them.
  • Provide relief to those who have fled areas of conflict.
  • Help children who have been orphaned, injured, or traumatized by conflict.
  • Incorporate conflict resolution and mediation strategies into service projects involving local schools, orphanages, workplaces, and community centers.
  • Recruit candidates for a Rotary Peace Fellowship. Up to 100 peace fellowships are offered annually at Rotary Peace Centers at universities around the world.
  • Pursue projects that address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tensions, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
  • Participate in fellowship and service activities with Rotary clubs in other parts of the world to promote understanding and peace.

Rotary Peace Fellowship application now available!
The 2018 Rotary Peace Fellowship application is now available! Our new online application will streamline the submission and review process and help districts manage the increasing number of Rotary Peace Fellowship applications.

Users of the new application can expect:
  • Better functionality and design
  • A district dashboard for reviewing and endorsing applications and communicating with applicants
  • Automated email communications from the platform
  • Technical support and training from our platform provider, Embark
  • A sign-in process that is separate from My Rotary and other Rotary databases and applications
Please note that the application is in English only, and we will no longer be able to accept PDF applications. As a Rotary leader, you play a key role in communicating information about the peace centers program to club and district leaders, who help identify and nominate candidates for the fellowships. We encourage you to use and share these resources:
  • Webinars for applicants (Chicago time, UTC-6, for all listings):
  • Webinars for Rotarians (Chicago time, UTC-6, for all listings):
Candidates have until 31 May to submit applications to their district. Districts must submit endorsed applications to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July. Should you need technical support in this transition, please contact Embark at support@embark.com. General inquiries regarding the fellowship program may be sent to rotarypeacecenters@rotary.org. We thank you for your dedication to the Rotary Peace Centers and your continuous support in educating the Rotary network about the fellowships!

Sincerely,
Rotary Peace Centers

8 Ways to Increase Association Membership

Memberships are the lifeblood of many associations, and for good reason – they represent professionals that establish standards and ethics in a given industry and, more importantly, they drive revenue. That’s why each year, association managers are tasked with one very special goal: TO INCREASE MEMBERSHIPS!  If your association membership numbers have been flat or, if even worse, you are losing members, you may need some fresh ideas to pump up your numbers. Start by putting yourself in the shoes of a potential member… Why would they join? What’s in it for them?  And for a new member, what would make them stay after their initial year?

There is definitely strength in numbers, so how can you give your membership count a boost?  I’ve rounded up a few simple ideas that are easy to implement and will help to get your creative juices pumping during your next strategy session.

1.  Market where your members hang out
2.  Host events that professionals will want to attend.
3.  Have a membership drive.
4.  Get feedback from current members.
5.  Keep existing members happy.
6.  Provide a personalized membership card.
7.  Begin the renewal process early.
8.  “Join NOW!” – Create urgency

Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Hunger.

Can you imagine 854 million dollars, 854 million candy bars, 854 million diamond rings, 854 million people? We all have difficulty in imagining this number, but for the 854 million people who live with chronic hunger, it is not something they try to imagine, but something they must try to survive. Malnutrition is the largest single contributor to disease; it imposes crushing economic burdens on the developing world. Freedom from hunger and malnutrition is a basic human right, and The Rotary Foundation is working to alleviate hunger and malnutrition. Many of the Matching Grants that the Foundation funds are for projects working toward this end of hunger. Every day, Rotarians take action to end the tragedy of world hunger. Make your annual gift today.

The ABC's of Rotary

The District Conference

Most Rotarians have never attended a Rotary district conference, which means they have not experienced one of the most enjoyable and rewarding privileges of Rotary membership.
A district conference is for all club members in the district and their spouses, not just for club officers and committee members. The purpose of a district conference is for fellowship, inspirational speakers, and discussion of matters that make one’s Rotary membership more meaningful. Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of the new experiences, insights, and acquaintances developed at the conference. Those who attend a conference enjoy going back, year after year.

Every Rotary district has a conference annually. These meetings are considered so important that the Rotary International president selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as his personal representative to attend and address each conference. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussions, and inspirational programs.

One of the added benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become better acquainted with members of one’s own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hours at the district conference.

Opportunities to give service

The club has fundraisers and service events coming up!

Give our Club all the support you can to make it successful.  We need all cylinders firing!!!  Please do what you can to serve our club.  If you not being asked to serve the club, ask where you can help!

Participate in Every Rotarian Every Year.  Any amount you can contribute will help the success of Rotary International in your community and around the world.  Let's try to become a 100% EREY club, where every member contributes something to the Rotary Foundation, either directly or through the club.

Think of another way in which you could serve our club, or help a committee chair with some of their responsibilities.  Abby and Kathy are assembling the team for the next Rotary year.  Help them in any way that you can, even if you have not been asked.

Participation is the key to an effective club!!!!

Serve Early, Serve Often!
