ROTARY  NEWSLETTER MARCH 4, 2009

It was a tremendous $1,000 Meal at the home of KAREN and JOE KELLEY. They graciously opened their home to welcome fellow Rotarians: DIETRICH, LEW, CONNIE, WILLIAM, CATHERINE, BART, JANET, BOB, SANDI, BEN, LISA, BERNIE, VERONICA and DIANE.

Our guests were DAVID TOMPSON, BOB KELLEY (Joe's BROTHER),

FATHER IGNATIUS IKUNZA, RAY HELMICK and JEROME MARYON.

We were all welcomed and feasted on hors d'oeuvres as our guests were introduced. They shared with us their gratitude for being invited and for our dedication to Rotary, which in the broader sense has become a vehicle to touch their work in a very special way.

Professor Ray Helmick continues to work closely with our club as his films are utilized in our Peace/Conflict Resolution Studies in Bangkok, Thailand. He and Father Ignatius are also involved in Kenya studies. Father Ignatius was present in Kenya with Dan Schmelzer on behalf of the Rotary Club of Nairobi to implement peace initiatives under "World Understanding".

Father Ignatius spoke to us from the heart in the cozy setting of the Kelley's family room where we were a captive audience, listening to  him speak of his dream to take his faith  and message of peace back to his people in Kenya. He broadly reminded us that we are all "Sons of Abraham", therefore qualifying for God's love, sanctity and peace. His presence was most amazing and when asked where his inspiration came from, he responded "his grandmother", who made all of her grandchildren walk miles to Mass with her each week, rising at 4 AM to be at church at 6AM. He said after many years, he "finally got it" and decided to come to the USA to enter the priesthood.

Jerome Maryon was our guest as the facilitator who sponsored Fr. Ignatius back in the States to deliver the Mass and be the speaker for Celebrating Africa Day this Sat. at St. Paul's Church in Harvard Square. Jerome is equally fascinating as a lawyer, theology student and former commissioner to the Navy JAGS.

On short notice and Dietrich's skillful planning, we were treated to a triumvirate of great minds and we felt they left their passions of peace through world understanding with us by their wonderful visit.

Thank you, Karen and Joe for making this happen!!!!!
