Jack discussed his own experience as a test pilot in the 1980's for the particular Aircraft. He mentioned that the plane was a one seater and was originally built by Kelly Johnson. The plane was flexible and cheap to build, it had a powerful engine, there was no simulator. He had to wear a pressure suit. He flew above 60,000 feet and the plane was created mostly because of paranoia within the US.
