July 24, 2013: Wilma Goodhue - Friendship Home
The regular weekly meeting of The Scituate Rotary Club was held on Wednesday, July 24th, 2013, at the Scituate Country Club.

Those present were Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, Janice Brown, William Clark, Bill Coulter, Candace Cramer, Jamie Gilmore, Wilma Goodhue, Walter Heller, Beatrice Hurwitch, Michael Johnson, Joe Kelley, John Miller, Bart Nuboer, Sue O’Brien, Joan Powers, Janet Schmitz, Lucille Sorrentino, Jack Stebe, Billy Sullivan, Ben Summers, Lisa Tompson, and Bernie Westerveld.

President, Jack Stebe, convened the meeting at 6:30 PM with The Pledge to The American Flag.

Jamie Gilmore offered the Invocation.

Ben Summers presented Words of Wisdom.

President, Jack Stebe, introduced our guests: Bill Coulter, former Scituate Rotarian, now a Leominster Rotarian; Wilma Goodhue, Co-Director of Friendship House, and Billy Sullivan, a resident and employee at Friendship House.  They were warmly welcomed into the evening fellowship of our club.

RYLA recipients will be with us at our next meeting on Wednesday, July 31st.  Come and enjoy the company of such energetic and wonderful young people.

Jack announced A Million Dollar Meal on The Fourth Cliff for Wednesday, August 7th, 2013.  What a lovely summer meeting that promises to be!  Save the date and make plans now to attend.

Sue and Walter attended The South Shore Council Meeting and Sue read the minutes she had taken at that meeting.  It was very informative and we ate grateful to Sue for sharing the report with us.  The next SSC Meeting will be on August 21st, 2013.

Jack called attention to the committee assignments he had emailed to club members and asked everyone to take special note of her/his committee.

Walter Heller told about possible attractive Scituate Rotary bumper stickers, and an available history of Scituate Rotary.  For more information, please see Walter.

Lucille Sorrentino received a standing ovation for the fantastic fundraiser she single-handedly masterminded.  The concert with Tony DeBlois was totally enjoyable, heart-warming, and an incredible success.  Thank You, Lucille, for a magnificent evening.  You are, once again, amazing!

Joan Powers, our resident photographer, made a collage of photos detailing Tony’s Concert.  Thank You, Joan, just beautiful!

Joe read a letter he had received from Razia Jan requesting financial aid to beautify the grounds on which The Michael Kelley School in Afghanistan is located.  There was sympathy with this request and Jack will be keeping this in mind as he works on the budget for the coming year.

As Past President, Joe Kelley, is heading up The Pancake Breakfast for Scituate Heritage Days.  The Kitchen Crew will meet at St. Mary’s at 6:30 AM.  Everyone involved with food handling will wear plastic gloves.  Members are asked to volunteer to sell ten tickets, or make a contribution of equal value.  This is a great event and one of our major fundraisers.  Happily, there is a job for everyone!

Walter Heller conducted Happy Sad Bucks and The Search for the Queen.  The elusive queen is still up to her old tricks.

After a delicious dinner served by Maureen, Bart Nuboer introduced our speaker of the evening, Wilma Goodhue, and Billy Sullivan, who assisted her. Wilma is a co-founder of Friendship Home at 458 Main Street in Norwell.  Billy is a member of Friendship Home who loves to cook and help out.  We were so pleased to have both of them at our meeting.

Friendship Home is The Home With a Heart that builds a community of support for people with developmental disabilities and their families.  Founded in 1999, Friendship Home is an awesome place that speaks to many areas of the life of a person with developmental disabilities.  It is a place of encouragement and hope that fosters friendship and a sense of belonging.

Friendship Home offers many relevant programs for participants: including Bridges to Work Career Program; Individual Support Services and Agency with Choice; Overnight Respite; Friendship Club, where participants cook together, engage in community service, and take part in recreational activities; Travel Club; and Partnering with The YMCA, Habitat For Humanity, and other organizations and businesses.

Friendship Home is proud of what they have accomplished since 1999.  They have completed their “Home With A Heart,” created unique and responsive programs, and built a skilled and caring team of staff and volunteers.  They are “Opening Doors and Changing Lives” every day.

As Wilma told us about The Mission, History, and Programs of Friendship Home, we could not help admiring The Community of Believers at The United Church of Christ, Norwell, for donating the property on which Friendship Home is built.  Wilma’s quiet competence is self-evident, as she radiates calm, caring, and compassion.  Thank You, Wilma, for sharing your accomplishments and dreams for an even better, more far reaching Friendship Home in the future.  You are teaching us and we are learning.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Lois Brandes
