July 18th, 2012: SANDS, Susan Phippen
Scituate Rotary Club Members and Honorary Members present were Dietrich Bilger, Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, James Gilmore, Walter Heller, Joe Kelley, Connie Mitchell, Joan Powers, Judy Price, Robert Price, Sandra Schipul, Janet Schmitz, Jack Stebe, Ben Summers, Lisa Tompson, and Bernie Westerveld.
Our esteemed guests were Nancy Jacobs, whose husband was a past Scituate Rotary Club President, Mike McCarthy, a Rotarian from PA, and Susan Phippen, our speaker for the evening.

President, Joe Kelley, opened the weekly meeting at 6:30 pm at The Scituate Country Club with The Pledge to The American Flag.

Ben Summers offered the Invocation.

Janet Schmitz led the speaking of The Four Way Test.

Ben presented Words of Wisdom.

Janet Schmitz reminded members about the organization for The Rotary Pancake Breakfast on August 4th during Scituate Heritage Days. This event is one of seven major fundraisers and represents a sizable percentage of our monies raised during this year. She urged all members to take part in some way. Let's all get behind Janet and make this a memorable Heritage Days' Rotary Breakfast. Thanks to Janet for all her effort on this important project. Joe proposed that we sell raffle tickets for a $300 dollar shopping spree to a market.

We have received word from Suzanne Kavanagh that the dinner meetings on August 1st and August 29th will be GIE's. On August 1st, Walter Heller will host the dinner at his home, and on August 29th, Janice Brown will host the dinner at her home. Please put both of these dates on your calendar!

Joe Kelley has made connections with Operation Outreach Afghanistan. OOA will empower the Afghan people through compassionate humanitarian assistance and provide a reliable avenue through which Scituate Rotary can donate to the Michael Kelley School. Two hundred fifty soldier volunteers are part of this organization. One can access website www.opoutreach.org to familiarize oneself with this humanitarian endeavor. Thank you, Joe, for your expertise in these important matters.

Joe regularly attends The Scituate Veterans' Council Meetings. There will be a Run For The Fallen on
September 8th. One mile will be run for every fallen soldier and 167 soldiers have fallen since 9/11. More details to be given later.

Susan Phippen updated us on the work of SANDS, Scituate Alliance of Natural Disaster Service. One thousand booklets listing charitable helping organizations were ordered and handed out to needy victims. Money is never given directly to individuals, but gift cards and necessary items and comfort kits are made available to natural disaster victims. Scituate Rotary is included in the booklet and the SANDS website is info@sandshelps.org. A criteria committee decides who gets what services, etc. Thank you, Susan, for all your efforts to establish a system that delivers timely help to those in need.

Respectfully submitted,
Lois Brandes
