January 4th, 2012: Club Night

Scituate Rotary Club Members present at the first meeting of the new year, 2012, were Dietrich Bilger, Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, Jeannie Durkee, James Gilmore, Walter Heller, Suzanne Kavanagh, Joe Kelley, John Miller, Bart Nuboer, Joan Powers, Robert Schipul, Sandra Schipul, Janet Schmitz, Jack Stebe, Ben Summers, Mimi Svenning, Lisa Tompson, and Howard Tufts.

The first Scituate Rotary Meeting of the new year was convened at The Scituate Country Club at 6:30 P.M. with President Jamie Gilmore presiding.

Bob Schipul led The Pledge to The American Flag.

Ben Summers offered the Invocation.

President Jamie led the speaking of The Four Way Test.

Jamie Gilmore and Joan Powers received Paul Harris Fellow Awards for the second time.  Janet Schmitz presented pins to our Paul Harris Fellows.

Sandi Schipul held the winning ticket for The Queen of Hearts, but alas, she did not draw the queen.

Jack Stebe reported that The Giving Tree Project raised more than ten thousand dollars for Scituate and Marshfield Charities.

PrePETS is at Whites in Westport on Saturday, January 28.

Multi Districts PETS will be on March 8-10 at the Sheraton in Framingham.

The District Leadership Development Conference will be at CC in Rhode Island on April 14, 2012.

The District Conference will be at The Viking Hotel in Newport Rhode Island on April 20-22.

April 28th will be District Wide Service Above Self Day.

Two main items of business presented from the Board meeting preceding at 5:15 were Dietrich Bilger's Installation Event, and the Slate of Officers for the new year.

Suzanne Kavanaugh and Mimi Svenning worked on the committee with Dietrich to set things in motion for his governorship installation.  The committee recommended that one dinner meeting a month be designated as a fundraiser for this event in the same format as a Million Dollar Night.  Jamie reported that on behalf of Scituate Rotary he was signing the contract with Indian Ponds Country Club.  This is a HUGE committment for our club, so EVERYONE will need to help with the fundraising and planning for  Dietrich's Installation.

At the preceding Board Meeting, members in attendance discussed and resolved the President-Elect vacancy and other vacancies for the new year.

Joe Kelley offered to be President, Jack Stebe is The Vice-President, Lois agreed to be Secretary for another year, Jeannie is continuing as Treasurer for now, Janet Schmitz agreed to be Foundation Treasurer in the vacancy created by Joe's moving to the office of president, and Howard Tufts agreed to be a board member.  It was moved to accept this slate, seconded, and the board members voted to accept and present it at the meeting to follow.  Jamie did then present this slate to us tonight with the addition of another board member, John Miller, who volunteered for this office.  It was then moved, seconded, and the nineteen members present at this assembly voted unanimously to accept this slate of officers for the new year.

President Jamie read the obituary for Lew Burridge sent to us from his family.  Lew had an incredible lifetime of purpose and accomplishment.  We were all privileged to know him and have him be a part of Scituate Rotary.  We fondly remember him.

Ben Summers closed our meeting with Words of Wisdom.

Respectfully submitted,

Lois Brandes
