January 30, 2013,  Scituate Police Officer, Dom D'Arcangelo

The weekly meeting of The Scituate Rotary Club was held at The Scituate Country Club on Wednesday, January 30th at 6:30 PM.

Members and guests present were Lambert Brandes, Lois Brandes, Dom D'Arcangelo, Walter Heller, Joe Kelley, John Miller, Joan Powers, Lucille Sorrentino, Ben Summers, David Tompson, Lisa Tompson, and Bernie Westerveld.

The meeting was called to order and began with The Pledge to The American Flag.

Ben Summers offered the Invocation, and all spoke The Four Way Test.

The Country Club will be closed for a short time in February and on those dates we will meet at The Mill Wharf.  Exact dates to follow when it is more definite.

All enjoyed Words of Wisdom from Ben Summers.

The secretary read the report and it was approved.

Joe urged all members to support Janet and Lucille and make calls to new businesses for Phone Book Ads.

Walter Heller presided over Happy Sad Bucks and Queen of Hearts.  The pot is growing fatter each week, and still no winner!  Only if you are at the meeting, do you have the chance to draw the queen.

After dinner, Joe Kelley turned the meeting over to Officer Dom D'Arcangelo.  Officer Dom is no stranger to Scituate Rotary, and he talked to us out of his heart about the love he has for the work he does with the students in Scituate.  His work in the schools is all encompassing, and by no means is it restricted to drug education.  Drug education is at the forefront; however, and statistics show that drug programs in the schools, such as the one Officer Dom administrates, have dramatically lowered the incidence of drug use among young people.

Officer Dom is also involved in helping students think rationally and creatively about life saving behaviors in the event of real emergencies during the school day.  Fire Drills and Lockdowns can only be effective if students are faced with problem situations and learn problem solving behaviors that they could transfer to real life events. God forbid they will ever need to use them.  Bullying is another topic that Officer Dom broaches with students.  He is involved teaching strategies and protective behaviors to students so that they can deal effectively with any bullying situation they may encounter.

Officer Dom engaged us with his knowledge and wit, and it is easy to understand how he would be a favorite with the students.  He was delighted to accept a generous check from Scituate Rotary to enable him to fill in some of the blanks left from ordinary funding.  "Officer Dom, thank you for sharing with us your expertise about and insight into today's students.  Blessings on your work!

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Lois Brandes
