Vice President Candace Cramer opened the meeting at 6:30 p.m. at our beautiful venue at South Shore Country Club with the Pledge of Allegiance lead by Paul and the prayer said by Bart. Our guest was Beverly Briggs Westerveld. The following members were in attendance as follows: Candace Cramer, Janet Schmitz, Diane Waterfield, Walter Heller, Bob Price, Bernie Westerveld, Paul Prescott, Joan Powers, Karen Kelley, William Clark, Dietrich Bilger, Bart Nuboer, Connie Mitchell, Ben Summers, Lew Burridge and Lisa Tompson.

Candace invited Janet, in Sandi Schipul's absence, to give the Secretary's report. This included a district thank you from Amy Jo Aronson that we are planning to send two Scituate High School students to RYLA; an e-mail from our sister club in Russia outlining the presentation of Scituate Rotary funded gifts to the children in the orphanage; a note that the President of the Cohasset club reported that their board has voted to send $2500 in Paul Welch's memory to our sister club in Russia; an announcement that Peter Alden will be talking about the past, present and future of Massachusetts trees at the SSAC this Sunday, February 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $10.00; a presentation to Walter of  Valentine cards from two fourth graders at Wampatuck School thanking him for his help with the immigration project.

Diane, our Treasurer, reported that next week she would make a mid-year Treasurer's report. Diane also told us how both she and Bernie attended service classes at SHS where three projects were presented - one on Aids; the second on the Dove House (a shelter in Quincy for abused women and children); the third on the Scituate Animal Shelter. Both the Dove House and the animal shelter are in need of donations - a list was presented at the meeting.

Janet also reported on the phone book. She happily announced that we've sold enough ads to cover the cost of the book; however, in order to make a profit, we must sell more ads. Janet passed out sheets to members to follow up on companies, which placed ads last year, but which have not yet done so for this phone book. Both Candace and Janet stressed the importance of contacting these companies this week.

Other announcements included one that Dietrich, William and Candace attended the meeting last Saturday for pre-presidential training. Karen told us that dredging of the new Marine Park has begun, as well as South Shore Vocational student's construction of the new building; she shared two recent articles from the Patriot Ledger on the subject. Dietrich also reminded us that the deadline for the District Conference at West Point in May is coming up.

After Happy/Sad Bucks and a lovely meal served graciously by Maureen, Candace told us about the request from Gates School for funds to help support a trip to Washington, D.C. for students to attend the National Future City competition. Gates students had won the regional contest for the second year in a row. Rotary members contributed money; some of which will be matched by Rotary Foundation funds. Joan requested help for the COA's ice cream social on February 10. Members voted to allocate $150.00 to cover the cost of this fun Valentine's celebration.

Candace thanked the members and adjourned the meeting at 8:04 p.m.
