Jack Stebe was inducted as a new member to our club by our President, Candace Cramer. Jack is not new to Rotary. He belonged to the Rotary Club in Arizona. He and his wife Nancy recently moved to Marshfield. Nancy is originally from Braintree and Jack is from Maine. Jack is a retired pilot from the Air Force. He is a Vietnam veteran. Jack also worked at MIT for many years. We are very happy to have Jack in our club and know he will be a great member.

Rene Summers was our guest speaker. April is National Poetry Month. And since Rene is very accomplished and published poet, it is wonderful that she was able to lead our poetry night. Lisa Tompson recited Walt Whitman's "Oh Captain, My Captain".
"Somebody's Mother" by an unknown author was recited by Joan Powers. Sandi Schipul shared the poem she composed as a tribute to Bob O'Brien, a friend who passed away from cancer. The poem is called "Home". One of our members came up to the podium with a quote from Earnest Hemingway "For Sale - Baby shoes never worn". A rather sad story in one line. Beverely Westerveld shared a childhood poem by Stephen Val called "The Tree". She memorized this poem as a child and still remembered it.

Ron Wheatley spoke about Phyllis Wheatley, the first African Slave of America to be published. She came to America on a slave ship when she was seven years old. She was rescued by Suzanne and John Wheatley in Boston. We are hoping that Ron will come back at a future date to speak in more detail about Phyllis Wheatley.

The evening culminated with Rene reading some of her poems. The selections included "Waves", "Spring is Eternal", "The Pear Tree", "A Right of Passage", "My Antique Presence", "Warning", and "Etchings 1,2,&3".
And to end the program, Ben Summers read a poem that this granddaughter wrote when she was thirteen entitled "The Deep Blue Sea".

There were many more people that wanted to read their favorite poems. There was not enough time. The club hopes to have another poetry night soon.

Respectfully submitted,
Janice Brown, Secretary
