Fran Jefferies has been in Rotary since women were first welcomed, in 1987. She believes that healing is in forgiveness and recognizes a peace-building role in her life. After looking at her life (13 months in post war Nagasaki, time in post war Germany, time in post-apartheid South Africa, work with getting rid of land mines, and learning that Rotary advances world peace and understanding) and finally noticing Rotary’s Peace and Conflict Resolution programs, Fran said, “I want to do that!” decided to apply for the very competitive scholarship offered by Rotary International. MUCH to her surprise she won an award for 3 months in Thailand.
Fran talked about the 6 World Peace Centers, how they expand and strengthen networks, open doors and lead to Master’s Degrees and peace in the world. She reminded us that the International Red Cross and RI are the only 2 non-government members of the UN. She encouraged all to go to a UN day in November honoring Rotarians. (Do I remember that Lucille went last year?)
Fran spoke of her individual project working with “cities in transition” with P. O’Malley. She has recognized how little Rotarians know about RI’s Peace works and has made it her mission to let them know! Thank you, Fran. She retired 10 years ago and tells us all to look at how we fill our time and says to ask ourselves the question, “What do I really want to do?”  As Rotarians we are to take the challenge ourselves and daily say something about “peace”. Think about it and talk about it! Education is the quickest way to peace so our supporting of Razia’s and Michael’s schools are GREAT opportunities to promote peace in the world.

Next meeting on the 3rd, picking BB’s the 4th and pancakes the 6th!
