Our District Governor Steve Certa was our speaker, He gave us a little of his history. He met his wife in college of NY State. They both are from NY. They were both teachers. Steve was once a teacher at Scituate High School. He taught for 8 years and decided since the pay wasn’t that great he retired from teaching. He worked part time and then started his own business ( Watch All). After 28 years he sold his business and retired. He then joined Rotary in 1994. He founded the Weymouth first International project with the Safe passage a program working with the children and families, who live and work in the Guatemala City Dump He volunteers 40 hours a week.

Every year the Rotary International President has a choice to pick their own theme and logo.

Steve gave out pins with the logo. This year’s theme is: Rotary Making A Difference. The colors in his logo represents diversity in Rotary: age, race, color, religion, professions, and gender. The different levels of each color represents different levels of Rotarian passion, different levels of engagement, and different levels of involvement. Each level want to reach the top. The circle represents the world. Scituate Rotary is part of Rotary international We are Rotary international and Rotary International is passionate about Making a Difference all around the world.

He asked “Where do you fit in? Identify your passion of Rotary and make a difference. What is your passion about Rotary and why do you want to come back. Identify your passions. Care about your passion and make a difference. Get involved with the environment. The new RI President hopes that each club will plant a tree for each member in their club. If this were done, we would have 1.2 million new trees. Steve suggested if each club could plant at least one tree at a minimum, this would still be beneficial. He talked about Rotary Foundation and said that every member should try to give a something to the foundation and if possible $!00 over the year. If you save the price of coffee each day then you would have $100 that year for the foundation. Some of the foundation money goes to Polio Plus and to grants Rotary wants to raise one million each year for three years. Bill Gates matches $2.00 to very $1.00 raised by a Rotarian. By 2020 Rotary will have raised one point two billion dollars to polio. Money also given goes in investment for grants. In order to get grants you have to give money. The grant for 2016-2017 went towards Michael Kelly’s school in Afghanistan. There is still money for grants. For the 2017-2018 year Scituate Rotary received 1 district grant for Outreach Uganda for a water well. School. There is a Rotary scholarships for 30 thousand for graduates students who want to study in foreign countries. There are 6 areas. There is a selection process.

Reminded us of up coming events: August 22nd District 7950 at Paw Sox, Ride for Polio is September 17th . There is a motorcycle fellowship that will be in the ride. You don’t have to have a motorcycle you can drive a car. Oct. 16-22, 2017Zone Institute at Hartford, CT, Nov. 9, 2017 Foundation Dinner (Razia Jan speaker)
