On the evening of June 1, the Rotary Club of Jamestown hosted its 2023 College Scholarship winner during a dinner meeting held at Birdview (circa 1885) on Newport Street in the Dumplings. Rotary Club President and Birdview co-owner, Jeffrey Gravdahl, welcomed Rian Hines, the La Salle Academy senior and Jamestown resident, who wrote the winning essay. Gravdahl, along with Scholarship Committee Chair Lisa Molinari, presented Hines with the scholarship certificate and check for $2,000.
Hines read his essay on "What does 'Service Above Self'" mean to you?" and recounted his years of involvement with the local Jamestown charity, Operation Jack Rabbit, which helps the homeless and needy during holidays. After graduation from La Salle, Hines plans to have a fishing-filled summer, followed by enrollment at Boston College where he will study Economics and prepare for law school. "I hope to bring Operation Jack Rabbit to college and help even more people," Hines said. After college, he plans to become a lawyer and continue to advocate for people in need.
Hines' parents, Paul and Trish Hines of Jamestown, were also in attendance.
