Rotary Minute - International Peace Day
Posted by Arnica Rowan
The Rotary Minute is a 1-2 minute educational infomercial that we will have each meting to learn more about the world of Rotary.
Our Rotary Minute for the week of September 21st is on Rotary and the Advancement of Peace.
Â
There are four reasons we do work as Rotarians. These are the "Objects of Rotary." The fourth is "the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service."
Â
Today is the UN's International Day of Peace. You may not know that of the original delegates to charter the United Nations, 80% were Rotarians. It is no coincidence hat the two organizations have such similar ideals.
Â
But for far too many people in the world today, those gifts are only an elusive dream. They live in chains: a climate of insecurity and fear. It is mainly for them that this day exists.
In that spirit, the UN calls on people everywhere to observe one minute of silence on September 21st, in the name of peace. Sometime during your busy day today, I encourage you to pause, reflect on how lucky we are to live in a country where peace is the norm, and let each of us pledge to do more, wherever we can make a difference, to bring about lasting peace.
