Breakfast Meeting - October 15, 2009

Bryce Ashlin-Mayo was introduced as a guest for the morning. Bryce is the lead pastor at the Alliance Church in Vermilion and is also involved in starting a local Habitat for Humanity project for 2010.
Barry, Ken and Dean updated us on the progress with Oktoberfest preparations. Ticket sales have been slow so far but we still have until early next week to get some more tickets out there. We have a good response for silent auction items so far with several other donations pending.
Bryce Ashlin-Mayo spoke on the potential for a Habitat for Humanity project in Vermilion for 2010. Bryce started by telling us about the organization and how they function. Habitat builds basic homes and sells them to families who otherwise would not be able to afford their own home. Families who meet their strict criteria can then become home owners by participating in the project as well as making affordable monthly payments. Habitat builds approximately 200 such homes in Canada each year and opens a new home every 21 minutes somewhere in the world. Habitat relies on donations of cash, materials and labour as well as sourcing government grants for affordable housing. Cash raised from the sale of the home is then reinvested in a home for another family. Bryce is part of a local group co-ordinating a project in Vermilion for 2010.
