World Community Service Projects

These international humanitarian projects are managed by our district and supported by our club. Last year: water in the Dominican. This year: Russian Orphanages. A report from Dean Wood.
| Fellow Rotarians; I am very pleased to be sending you a report on our 2004 district project. To recap, our project goal was to supply 1,000 biosand filters to families in rural and poor urban areas in the La Vega region of the Dominican Republic. We estimate that about 5,000 people will benefit from clean drinking water. This technology is user friendly and very suitable for developing countries. It allows families to obtain water from their community source (e.g., well, river) and then purify it at home at the point of use. The total cost of the project is $56,115 US. District 5370 clubs and the Wild Rose Foundation provided $36,675 US. Our district foundation committee allocated $5,000 US from DDF Share. TRF provided $10,440 US and the District 4060 in the Dominican Republic provided $4,000 US. The report from our partner club in the DR is attached. It was prepared as of Nov. 30 so is probably a little out of date. It tells us that 294 filters (out of 1,000) have been installed. Two facilitators have been trained. The budget looks to be in good shape. In fact, it looks as if their unit costs are less than expected. Francisco, our partner in La Vega, also sent pictures in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. Because the file is too large to send as an attachment, we have posted it on the district web site under World Community Services Society - District Project 2004. We are working very hard on our 2005 project. We are raising $69,798 CDN as we partner with two Rotary clubs in Irkutsk, Siberia. The goal is to assist two orphanages and two schools. DG Elly and Ramiro along with Dee Louis from our board visited Irkutsk, researched the projects, and established partnerships with the clubs. We hope that each club in our district will contribute between $500 and $1,000 CDN. A full description of the project is available on the district web site our World Community Service Society.
