- Rotary International Youth Exchange – Lorne is talking about youth exchange so that when it is discussed at Dawn’s Budget Meeting next week where we will be making financial planning for the possibility of a youth exchange next year. (2025-2026 year). Lorne discussed the positives coming out youth exchange, both hosting and the opportunities that it provides for the outgoing student from the Vermilion area. The club has a long history of participating in youth exchange, we stepped away for several years so many of the new club members will not have participated in youth exchange. The costs associated with youth exchange are $10,000 per year. The outbound student would be responsible for half. There are inbound and outbound conferences and training that would also be required over and above that budget. The club needs an Inbound and Outbound Counselors. In the past club members have also taken our exchange student to events like the CFR, Skiing Trips etc. We would need host families to house the student, these do not need to be Rotarians, there is also an advantage if host families have children at home. In order to host the student (or to take them to an event) Adults need to have their vulnerable record check. Lorne’s son Jake is interested in participating in exchange. Students need to be 16 before they leave, and can’t turn 19 before they return. Deadline for selecting an outbound student would be December of this year. They would leave in August, returning in July of the next year. Exchanges are all foreign language and students need to be prepared that their school in that country will not count for their education at home. (outbound can not have already graduated) Most of the exchanges are in Europe, Japan is currently the only country outside this region that our region exchanges with. We would need at least 3 host families. (there can be more). All adults in the host family living at home need to have a criminal record check. We want to be selective. At least one adult at events with the student must have a record check. As a club all members during the youth exchange should have a record check.
