Guest Presentation:  Kyle Smith attendee of Adventures in Human Rights

Kyle attended the Adventures in Human Rights trip to Winnipeg in August.  He shared with the group many of the activities he took part in during his trip.  Many of the activities took place in the exhibits throughout the museum.  Each different exhibit held a different activity relating to the story behind it.  Kyle said that the museum is designed to show the stages of enlightenment as you ascend the different levels of the building….from darkness to light.  Kyle’s favorite exhibit was the Nelson Mandela exhibit.  The museum tries to explain “what are Human Rights” and showcase people that have influenced human rights in either a negative or positive way.  There was also an exhibit on genocides.  3 or 4 museum workers would hold sessions in the exhibit areas to help inform the students about human rights
Kyle and the other students also volunteered at a BBQ to feed the homeless and he was surprised at how many people said that the hotdog they received was their only meal that day.  The group also had a great guided tour of the Legislature Buildings, spent time at Fort Whyte, and the Lieutenant Governor’s house.  There were 24 students in total and 2 chaperones in the group and Kyle made friends that he speaks with daily.  The biggest thing Kyle took from the trip was the HUGE eye opening he received about homelessness and human rights issues.  His plan for the future is to study education and he has a conditional acceptance to the University of Lethbridge.
I have included a link to the Museum of Human Rights for anyone interested.
