Thank you Team 3 for Breakfast
Presentation - Phoenix, Jet, Ryan, Aaralyn & Shannon-Junior and Childrens’ Team Canada-Dance- Phoenix and a couple other dancers from Dance Impressions went to Calgary for the auditions for Team Canada-Dance, this is a very elite audition so they went in thinking that this would be a good opportunity and experience; however it turned out. A few weeks later Phoenix found out she was accepted onto the Junior -Team Canada (12-15 year olds), she is one of only 24 in the country on Team Canada-Tap. Team Canada was also looking for audition tapes for the Childrens’ Team Canada (age 9-11). Asia Clark, Jet Wilson, and Aaralyn Tupper got accepted. It is quite amazing that 4 dancers from Vermilion have been accepted. They will be travelling to Germany in November to compete in the World Dance championships against other countries. Each of the dancers spoke on what dance and this trip means to them. The minimum cost of the trip is about $3750 for a dancer, this does not include costumes, training and choreography in Calgary, nor the cost for an adult chaperone to Germany. There is no funding or subsidies for dance so they have to raise their own funds. They have raised money from one of Kirby’s BBQ’s, and held facepainting and other activities at MACK’s store grand opening. They want the dancers to put the effort into fundraising activities.
Vocational-Charlene Carey: After high school, Charlene, took 2 years at LLC in Early Childhood. And then worked at daycare starting as daycare worker and working up to program director. After deciding this was not the right challenge, she went back to school to Red Deer College to become a teacher. It was not quite the right fit because she really wanted more 1 on 1. So off to Calgary to the Child Studies program and found out that she really liked the area of childrens’ mental health.
Influencers- First introduced to Rotary in the Adventures in Agriculture-in Regina. Many 4-H opportunities: 4-H Leadership through Counselling, 4-H selections-UN & International Affair; 4-H National conference. The 5 summers going through school, Charlene worked at Fort George & Buckingham House(Elk Point) & for a short time at Victoria Settlement (near Smokey Lake). She worked for 3 year in cultural programing in Lloydminster and really liked being able to come up with an idea making that into an experience. Follow that she went into early intervention, where there are lots of avenues of interest and learned about caseloads. After that Charlene worked 2 years as an educational assistant mostly at the Junior High level & in the library. Charlene also worked for the Chamber of Commerce-using her tourism background.. Volunteerism is very important, some of the organizations that she has been involved with- 4-H, Ag Society, Art without Border, Pottery, and of course Rotary.
