Offsite meeting- Thursday, May 30th at Craig’s Cornerstone- Mary Lee has made arrangements for us. We will be meeting on the third floor. Please sign up if you will be attending so she knows breakfast numbers.
There is a thank-you card from Louise Cartwright being circulated.
Mayor Caroline McAuley will be joining us next week, Thursday, May 16th. Please feel free to bring a guest to the meeting.
Cash Raffle – Dawn: Of the 300 ticket, only 60 have left to be handed out. First draw is August 1st.
Interact-Long Table supper-Dawn: 300 Tickets printed. Starts at 6:30pm, Thursday, May 30th. A portion of main street will be blocked off for long table supper. Tickets can be purchased tickets ahead of time or at the event. New this year, there will be an option of a take-out to the field supper. Food will be in portable containers. Proceeds will go toward the construction of the new ice plant. The Interact Club is looking forward to your support- this is there community project for the year.
Canada Flags-Erwin: Please hand in your orders and money to Erwin. The database and money need to be reconciled and updated for Saturday-to see if there are any gaps, and also to prepare for Tuesday, our first flag delivery of the year. We usually start at 5pm-meet at Webb’s old RV. Before Tuesday the flags will also need to be looked over and repaired as needed.
Seacan: Project Storage-Brenda: Present background information to club before motion. The garage sale committee has been discussing issues with garage sale items that are stored in the off-season and is suggesting the purchase of a seacan. Although very appreciative of the use of Shopper’s basement, the stair does present some inconvenience; as well, our access is limited to store hours. A seacan would be easier get into and would be accessible at any time. We have been quoted a price of $4200 plus GST for a 40 foot seacan delivered and placed.
If the club does purchase a seacan, this is not open season on donations. We do not want to garage sale all year. We still will need to be discerning when taking off-season items. We will also be able to store flags, boxes for Books for Belize, and other project storage items. Thanks to Mike Webb and Scott Webb for offering a location on the north side of the old RV building, by the alley. There are no additional costs or by-law issues to place the seacans at Webb’s RV. If we don’t maximize the use of the seacan, it could be re-sold and money recouped.
MOTION by Brenda, second by MaryLee. The Rotary Club of Vermilion will purchase, with up to $5000, a 40 foot seacan for project storage. Friendly amendment by Darlene, accepted by Brenda and MaryLee. Increase amount to $7500 for purchase of acceptable two-door seacan. All in favor-Motion Carried.
Discussion: What about 2 sets of doors? We would have access at either end for different projects, and better lighting. 40 foot is full size. Would a two door also be 40’ or 42’. There will be another seacan placed at the old Webb’s RV, so the two seacans need to match-aesthetically. Are there any rules about where the money comes from? Can our club own a seacan? We have unrestricted revenue from flags and garage sale and this is just like owning a filing cabinet-just a lot bigger. Yes, like other clubs in the district we can own storage/property. Would the cost of having a two door seacan exceed $5000? Should we table this motion for later and allow more time to make inquires? The chair would like to see this decided today, so that it can be included in this year’s budget.
2019/2020 Update-MaryLee: Next year’s executive will be meeting soon to go over the budget, then it will be emailed out to members. Please review the budget and pass on any questions you might have. On Thursday,May 23rd, we will be going through the budget at the club meeting.
Sargent Report: No fines, but, hey it’s spring and so you can pay a dollar. There will be a Lookout Spring clean-up tonight at 7pm. Bring squeeze if you can. It won’t take long.
Past project: Project Amigo in 2000 in Mexico: promoting ladies sewing. Women could sew items that they could then sell locally. Past Vermilion Rotarian Joe Schriver was one prominent people behind the project.
