Adventures in Human Rights: Lorne: Looking for a student in grade 11 or 12 to go to Winnipeg in August for the Adventures in Human Rights. Deadline is May 15th - and there are only 24 spots. Info has been sent to schools (will add Outreach). The student should be not afraid to try things, be open-minded, interested in social justice.
VES Public Speaking: Dawn: Looking for 3 Rotarians to help with judging public speaking. On Tuesday, April 10th at 1 pm. It should take an hour or less. 3 students will speak for about 3-4 minutes each. The winner goes onto the next level. Tannis Henderson and Justin Thompson have volunteered. Please send Dawn a message if you are interested and can help.
Garage Sale: Brenda: Sign-up sheet is being circulated. There are lots of non-rotarians so we need Rotarians to be on the floor. If the sign-up sheet doesn’t get to you, it was emailed out to you. Let Brenda know what you can help with.
Friends of the Vermilion Regional Centre: Leanne Martin-Chair of the Board: The FVRC is looking for help in replacing the floor of the second dance room with spring flooring. Originally, the room wasn’t given the proper flooring-it has a cement base. A spring floor is needed for dance, and other physical activity so it can absorb shock. They have purchased mats for the room, but they are ending their life. Having mats also limits the rooms rental potential; the mats are in from September to April and they can not put in tables on the mats (ie Birthday parties). Wood flooring will increase it rental potential. They will also have to consider what adjustments will have to be made to the movable wall if spring flooring is put in. The room is approx 1000 sq ft. Show an example of what the flooring could look like.
The cost is estimated at $45,000-50,000. The FVRC will be looking at grant funding, assistance from the Town, and will be fundraising themselves-Sign Night, Movie Night. Asking for whatever help they can from us. All donors will be recognized on social media, the papers, and invited to the unveiling.
Questions & discussion: What is the lifespan of the hardwood? How would the current users contribute? The current user groups do not have a lot of money to contribute, but perhaps in volunteer manpower. The rental cost is currently $18.85 +tax, they have been notified of an increase. The fee is set by the Town Parks and Rec. Do not have grant application in yet, but would hope to get about ½ from grants.
Vocational: Mike Webb: Moments in Life. Mike shared pictures and memorable stories and moments with us. Mike lived in town till he was 12 years old then his family moved to the farm. He has 5 older sisters and a large extended family. After attending university for a year, he worked for Tubuscope, which deals with smart inline inspection tools for pipelines. He ended up spending time in Houston, Texas and then many places all over the world including Germany, Malaysia, Taiwan. Mike did go back to university where he met then married Michelle. After graduating he went back to the pipeline, he was able to benefit and make use of the past pipeline inspection work. He worked for Baker Hughes using smart tools to interpret and manage data for pipelines. He would often spent 3 weeks in Houston a month.
Mia was a babysitter for Cameron, who became like family. At the age of 18 she was diagnosed with leukemia. She had a bone marrow transplant and it didn’t take and she couldn’t do another. Cameron has spent a lot of time with Mia and they had a special relationship. In 2007, she was going down hill. She requested that Cameron not come any more and see her so sick. A short time after that, Mike was visiting her and telling her a story of what he was doing, and in the telling of the story he realized that he needed to be there more for his family. Around the same time, he was approached by cousins to come back to Vermilion, to Webb’s Ford and he did. And it has been wonderful.
