Randy – happy to have our two guests; celebrating his birthday this week (group sang happy birthday to him)

Presentation: Billy introduced our guest speakers: Mary Carlson and Wendy Cullinan who are involved with a committee to do a cape wide Rotary initiative with Habitat for Humanity.

Mary noted that Brad Boyd (Harwich) has taken on the lead with the initiative. She belongs to a small club also and thinks it would be good for clubs to partner.

Wendy is the Director of Human Development. Habitat has built 127 homes on Cape. She explained that home owners have to participate in 250 hours (per adult) in the building of the home. Buyers are given some budget training and they team with mentors. Mortgage usually $140,000 and payments are usually $650-$700 per month.
Volunteers who are committed volunteer twice a week.
She noted that all families except for 5 are still in their homes. If a family chooses to sell, it must be sold at affordable home price.
Land is acquired through community grant funds. They receive no funding from Habitat International.
They have re-stores in Falmouth and Yarmouth. Their staff (main office) is not as diverse as it could be. They have 8 full time and 1 part time employees.

Mary noted that all Rotary clubs should be involved with matching grants and a build day. Their goal is $100,000 and outreach to builders for donations. They are hoping to reach out to the Shelter from Storm Concert (Larry Brown) and others. It was suggested that they also partner with the Symphony and partner with the Melody Tent.

President Randy thanked Mary and Wendy for their presentation.

50/50 Raffle: $306 in pot Nefertiti won but got the 5 of Clubs and was given a consolation prize scratch ticket.

Announcements/Business
  • Installation of Officers: Jack will be unable to fill the position of President but, has offered to stay on as treasurer. Billy offered to take the presidency as he has already done pre-PETS and PETS. Vote was taken and approved for Billy to be President 2018-2019Kathy will update the roster and send it out.
  • Meeting Venue: Billy, Norman and Randy have checked out Cape Space on Independence Drive as a possible venue to hold our meetings. Although we have enjoyed our time at the College, the cost of being there has been draining our finances. It is also difficult for those with disabilities to climb the hill and 2 sets of steps. The Cape Space is flexible and includes coffee. Refreshments will need to be purchased on a weekly basis and brought in. we may be able to work out a deal with Panera or Dunkin Donuts. You would be able to bring in your own breakfast food but, we would need to have something available for guests. We have paid the College through the end of June and could move into Cape Space on July 2, 2018. It was agreed by those present to make the move. Thanks were given to John Cox for all his help in getting us a space on campus and for the cooperation of the cafeteria and facilities staff. Cape Space is located behind Rogers & Gray. Billy reminded those present that members would have to commit to bringing in the refreshments. Vote was taken and approved for Barnstable Sunrise Rotary Club to move to Cape Space on July 2, 2018.
  • Speakers: If you have a potential speaker, contact Kathy for an open date and then follow up with the potential speaker. Billy will have Mary Carlson from Bourne-Sandwich club on June 11th to discuss cape wide Rotary initiative on Habitat for Humanity. Kathy will contact Wylton regarding the 3 potential speakers he spoke to previously.
  • President Randy has attempted several times to reach out to Kelly and has not had any response.
  • Amy Wyman-Good Grief Project: Contacted Billy and Kathy. She has been successful in setting up locations and asks for our support. After discussing what we could do, it was decided to send her $375 which is half of the full amount.
  • Billy noted that he would do the Installation on July 2, our first meeting at Cape Space. Norm noted that he still has the Paul Harris pin for Muriel Glantz. It was decided that a few members would take her to dinner and present the pin at that time.
  • Words of Wisdom – a few dates were filled in for upcoming meetings however, we need to get people signed up for July and August. Please contact Kathy with your availability to do the Words of Wisdom. Christina is signed up for June 25th.

  • April 20 – Bourne Rotary Club is hosting an opiate seminar at 4Cs in the Tilden Arts Center
  • Sarah emailed an article that was in the Cape Cod Times regarding litter pick-up.  There is a number to call to set up a schedule for when and where.  Members agreed this would be a good thing to do.  It may be a good project to get the Rotaract and Interact Clubs involved with.  Perhaps we can do it once or twice a year.  Wylton will check into it.
  • Luke’s Love Project – Norman will call Suzanne Powers and see if she will be willing to come and speak to our club.  The playground has been moved and they will need some help.  Billy will talk to Kelly and perhaps she and Christina can use this as their project.  We can put in the money and be reimbursed by the District.
  • Rotary Council has moved to have a cape-wide initiative.  Billy noted that CORD is doing another mobile pantry vehicle and perhaps we can support it.
  • Habitat for Humanity will be building a home soon.  It was suggested that we ask clubs to join in and write a multi-club grant.  The Club would put in $1500 and the District would match it.  There is a definite need for affordable housing on Cape Cod.

Why Rotary?  President Randy thanked Billy for helping his daughter connect with the Yarmouth police to help out with a project that she is working on.  This is just another example of the advantages of Rotary membership and networking.  Kudos to Billy!!!
Membership – Billy noted we need to grow and suggested that we formulate a plan and put the plan into action.  We also need more speakers and need to do more in-club service BAG meetings.

Sarah suggested putting labels over our addresses on the Rotarian magazines and distributing them at doctor’s offices, etc.

Other suggestions included attending newcomer’s club, attend Young Professionals meeting, contacting realtors to see if they would distribute our info to new homeowners and contacting Chambers of Commerce.

President Randy suggested a committee be formed to work on a membership plan and would also like to have one “after hours” meeting per month.  All members should be involved and we will discuss this again in two weeks.

Billy took the floor and noted that we now meet in a more remote location and we should have signage so guests can find us.  Kathy asked Sarah if a flyer could be done and copied and approved by college officials to put on bulletin boards around campus.  Billy mentioned that the Rotaract Club still did not have a banner with all sponsoring Rotary clubs listed.  He has been researching details on banners on some sort of stand and Billy made a motion to purchase one rollup banner for our Club to put at the bottom of the stairs and one rollup banner for the Rotaract Club with all sponsors listed at a cost of $550.00.  The motion was 2nd by Kathy and approved unanimously.

Workshops and Libraries will be provided to raise awareness for children and teens.   Right now she is working with several towns and wants to extend those services.  She needs funding and would need $750 to get the project started here.  Billy suggested that she also bring her request to the Yarmouth, Osterville and Hyannis Clubs and offered to help her get in.
