WHY JOIN THE ROTARY CLUB OF ALLIANCE?
Rotary is an organization that is both local and international in scope. The mission of Rotary International states that it is a worldwide association of Rotary Clubs that provide service to others, promote high ethical standards, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.
Rotary was founded in 1906 by Paul Harris in Chicago, Illinois and today there are over 34,000 clubs worldwide, in over 140 countries, with 1,200,000 plus members. The Alliance club was founded in 1917 and is one of the oldest clubs in Ohio.
The Alliance Club is involved in many local projects including the Alliance Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, YMCA Summer Camp, the YMCA Healthy Teen Program, the Rodman Public Library Summer Reading Program, and Pegasus Farm to name just a few. We have a large Christmas party every year for needy and deserving children from our Alliance schools where we entertain them, give them lunch and Santa gives each child a nice gift. Also, four years ago, the Alliance Rotary club purchased what is now known as the Alliance Skateboard Park.
Internationally, our main project has been the eradication of polio throughout the world. Since the Polio Plus program started in 1985, more than two billion children have received the oral polio vaccine and as a result, 210 countries are polio free. As of June 2011, Rotary has committed more than 1 billion dollars to global eradication.
Our exchange student program fosters understanding between different cultures and provides another educational opportunity for our local teens.
Our local fundraisers are highly visible in the community and include the Fly the Flag Project, the Castle Labor Day Run and A Night at the Mansion.
