SHELTERBOX AND ROTARY CLUBS TAKE ACTION FOLLOWING EARTHQUAKE IN ITALY
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Italy early Wednesday, killing more than 240 people and trapping an unknown number beneath rubble. Tremors were felt as far away as Rome, 100 km (65 miles) southwest of the quake's epicenter.

International disaster relief agency and Rotary International project partner ShelterBox is sending a response team from its headquarters in the United Kingdom to the remote mountainous area of Italy where the destruction is most severe. The response team will arrive Friday, 26 August, to assess the area's needs.

In October the Pantano Rotary Club had a very unique opportunity to participate in a worthy project, the Sibling Picnic event, where the Foster Care Review Board and several agencies working with foster kids in Tucson put on a picnic for foster children throughout Tucson to come together one day in the year so that they can be with their siblings also in the foster system.  Many of these children are living in different homes separated from each other all year long and this is their one opportunity in the year to be together - it was  heartwarming to witness their joy as they reunited with their siblings and spent time together for fun and games at this annual event.

A story worth being shared over and over...From the Rotary International Web Site:  By Ryan Hyland

Rotary News

Rotary General Secretary John Hewko and six RI staff members bicycled 104 miles in Tucson Arizona, USA, on Saturday, November 15, 2014 , for the event, raising more than $6 million for polio eradication.

The money raised by Rotary will receive a two-to-one match from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

In addition to the team from Evanston, 100 Rotary member riders took part in the ride.

The fundraising ride is part of the annual El Tour de Tucson bike event in Tucson, Arizona, USA. The race attracts more than 9,000 cyclists a year, making it one of the top cycling events in the U.S. The Rotary team from Evanston was joined by Rotary members from Arizona's District 5500, and other members from around the world.

Hewko tweeted that he finished the race in 5 hours and 2 minutes.

"Really enjoyed riding in El Tour de Tucson along with 100 Rotarians and members of the Rotary International staff," Hewko added. "As a group we were able to raise over $6 million for polio eradication which will help bring us even closer to the dream of a polio free world. I am deeply moved by the generosity and passion of Rotarians around the world and Rotary staff."

In addition to loading up all the shoeboxes, jackets, blankets and other items for the trip to Nogales, we also did some fundraising for our Foundation at the Fourth Avenue Street Fair. We sold beer on the corner of 4th Avenue and 5th Street on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was an absolutely perfect weekend for the fair and for beer sales. We thank everyone who supported us by purchasing a cold beer, wine or water from us and especially for your TIPS because we get to keep 100% of the tips we receive. We'd also like to thank all the club members who help sell as well as a number of volunteers from around Tucson. We love all of you and the support we receive from this community that allows us to turn those dollars around and help others who need our help. We'll be looking for all of you again in the Spring!

ScottWhat a busy meeting we had today. It started out as a club assembly day but turned into a 2 speaker day and new member induction. Our first speaker was Scott Rustand from Diveheart, an organization promoting scuba diving for disabled people.

Jessica CoxOur second speaker was Jessica Cox. Jessica was born without arms, but that has not stopped her from doing just about anything she puts her mind to. She got her pilot's license in 2009 and transformed her life. She is now a motivational speaker traveling all over the world. She and her husband ...are making a movie called RightFooted. It's a documentary about Jessica's extraordinary perseverance as she overcomes her own personal challenges. You can find out more about the movie at www.rightfootedmovie.com. I think most would agree that Jessica was one of the most inspirational speakers we have had at our club.

ImageAs if that wasn't enough, we also were excited to welcome new member Clarissa Marquez to our club. Clarissa was previously a member of the Topeka, Kansas Rotary Club.

ImageThe world has lost a wonderful woman with a big heart and Rotary International has lost one of it's most devoted members. PDG Val Scanlan lost her battle with cancer this past Friday. What we want to share with you is the letter her husband, Denny,  composed shortly after her death. He explains better than anyone the impact she made here on this earth. We'll miss you Val and our thoughts and prayers are with you Denny.

Ardys received an email from the Nogales Rotary Club this week. They are in desperate need of desks for their school children. The content of of the email is below. If you have any ideas or know someone who else who may know please pass this information along to them.

Hola a todos los amigos Rotarios!!! we hope everyone is doing fine in the other side of the border, I know Jim is ok because I just had the pleassure to shake hands with him a couple of days ago.
I have a big request, hopefully somebody in your clubs have contacts that can help with this, here is the issue: we have been receiving a lot of calls and emails from schools in Nogales, we have a big issue right now in many schools, they are overloaded and many children are taking classes on the floor because we do not have enough desks for them. if someone knows about schools that are donating old furniture we will be really happy to bring them to Nogales.
Thank you very much for your attention, if you find something, please let us know and we will figure out how to go and get them.
Best regards to all of you and your club members.

Muchas Gracias

ImageOur very own Jerry Heintze was awarded the Energizer award by DG Nancy Cassel last week at our First Tuesday meeting August 6th for his many contributions to Pantano Rotary.  Jerry has single-handedly taken on the onus of organizing our twice yearly Fourth Avenue Street Fair booth set-up, tear-down and sees to it that it is well-manned by our club members and basically makes sure everything runs smoothly.

Also, our second and newest fundraiser, the Lucky Lottery Calendar, was designed and coordinated by Jerry.  The idea was brought to us by Jane Klipp and Jerry’s know how has made it a wonderful finished product that everyone is proud to show and sell to help us raise monies for our many charities that we support.  Besides, Jerry is a Past President of Pantano and has held many Board positions.  He never stops working for our club and I believe this award is so appropriate and is very well deserved.  Please pat him on the back next time you see Jerry and let him know how much he is appreciated.

Tuesday was a big day for the Pantano Rotary Club. First, we need to announce a couple of recent winners in our Calendar Lottery. Last week, 07/09, our $100 winner was Mia Hansen. Mia is a member of the downtown Presidio Rotary Club and also the head of Tucson Meet Yourself. Our $100 winner for this week, 07/16 is David Smith of Tucson. Congratulations to both of these winners and a huge thanks from the Pantano Rotary Foundation for supporting our fundraiser and all the projects and groups that we support.

President Mike Next, our club President for 2013-2014, Michael Shupe was sworn in to office by PGD Sandy Goodsite. We're excited to have Mike as our President for next year. He is the youngest President we have had for some time and we are looking forward to his enthusiasm and new ideas to lead the club this next year. In addition, all of Michael's Directors and Board members were sworn in for the year. Also very exciting because we have a number of our new members who have stepped up to take positions this year.

As one of President Mike's first duties in office was to award new member Lisa Hall with her Gold Badge. All new members receive a Blue Badge with they join the club, but after completing a number of projects and assignments, they are awarded their Gold Badge. Congratulations to Lisa on her accomplishment.

For the past three years, Rotary clubs have illuminated landmarks and iconic structures around the world with the humanitarian group's dramatic pledge to End Polio Now. This year's round of light displays takes on added significance due to the progress Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have made in India. In January, India -- until recently an epicenter of the crippling childhood disease -- reached a historic milestone by marking a full year without recording a single new case. A New Polio Vaccine Helps Eradicate this Dread Disease

The bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) is proving to be a potent weapon in the global battle to eradicate the disease.

Developed to stop transmission of the type 1 and type 3 wild polioviruses simultaneously,  bOPV was introduced in all four polio-endemic countries -- Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan -- in late 2009 and early 2010. It has helped reduce the incidence of polio in India to 39 cases as of 26 October, compared to 498 for the same period in 2009. The number of cases in Nigeria has fallen to 8 from 382 for that period.

"There’s been the largest ever year-to-year drop in polio cases following the use of bOPV," says Dr. Bruce Aylward, director of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) at the World Health Organization.

The results of a field trial published in the British medical journal the Lancet in October underscore the effectiveness of the new vaccine. The randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, conducted by WHO between August and December 2008, involved 830 newborns in India who received bOPV or another polio vaccine.

"In this study we showed that the bivalent [vaccine] is much better than the trivalent," says Dr. Roland Sutter, coordinator of the GPEI’s research and product development team. "We get about 30 [percent] to 40 percent more immunity [from] the bivalent compared to the trivalent for types 1 and 3." The study also showed that bOPV is just about as good as the monovalent vaccines, which protect against only one strain of polio.

Pantano, Rincon, Old Pueblo and the Sunset club arrived at 8:00am and began transforming the drab beige walls to bright, clean, white walls. In just over 2.5 hours our mission was complete. Ed Torrejon was elated and very grateful for a job well done. Click here to see the pictures.

The Fountain Youth Ministries, a nonprofit tax-exempt organization was established in 1999 to help at-risk youth. Over the years they have fed homeless teens, ministered to families in need and have worked with all the problems associated with at-risk youth.

In 2009 they were blessed to open the 6th Street Gym. They are using the gym as a safe environment where kids come to learn the discipline of sports, while at the same time learning some of life’s lessons through the celebrated moments that sports provide.
