Each year the Scholarship Committee of the Liberty Rotary Club is tasked with finding students in Liberty Public Schools who exemplify Rotary ideals. Through essays and interviews, the
committee looks for students who are committed to serving others, promote integrity, and are leaders in their school and community. The Liberty Rotary Club’s largest event, the Butt Buster Barbecue, funds the clubs investment in local youth. This includes the $22,500 that is awarded to three top Liberty School District Seniors. The President’s Challenge Scholarship was started nearly 30 years ago and is awarded to a student who will attend William Jewell College. The total scholarship is for $10,000 and is awarded over eight semesters. Our club and William Jewell co-sponsor this award. This year we were pleased to announce Jocelyn Hayes as our President’s Challenge Scholar. Jocelyn attended Liberty High School. She participated in a variety of activities in school as well as volunteering at a youth camp. She is excited to build connections at William Jewell College.
The Service Above Self Scholarship may be used to attend any accredited college or university. It is given to a student who has shown service leadership in activities at school and in the community, as well as academic ability. The total scholarship is $2500 and is awarded over two semesters. We were excited to announce Nicholas Zylstra is the recipient of the Service Above Self scholarship. Nicholas attended Liberty North High School. Nicholas participated in a variety of school activities including The Liberty Junior Police Academy and Northland Career Center Law Enforcement/Crime Scene Investigation program. Nicholas will be attending Northwest Missouri State University and majoring in Human Services, preparing him to enter a career of Law Enforcement.
The Community Leader Scholarship is awarded to a top student who has been active in the community. This $10,000 scholarship is awarded over eight semesters. We were thrilled to announce Kymon Warman as the Community Leader Scholarship recipient. Kymon attended Liberty High School. He participated in and held leadership roles in numerous school and community organizations. He will be attending The University of Missouri majoring in Journalism/Communications/Media.
