State of the College
![]() The William Jewell College Board of Trustees named Dr. Drew Van Horn as president. Van Horn’s extensive higher education experience includes 10 years as president of Brevard College (North Carolina) and seven years at Young Harris College (Georgia). He has specialized in supporting private liberal arts institutions embarking on strategic change. In December 2024, William Jewell College launched Reimagine Jewell, a set of initiatives intended to transform its operations. Van Horn’s vision emphasizes personalized education rooted in the liberal arts and humanities, aimed at preparing students for successful careers and civic engagement in a constantly changing world. He is known for improving student experiences, strengthening academic programs and increasing commitment to affordability and tuition transparency. Under his leadership, both Brevard and Young Harris experienced a rise in student enrollment, developed new academic and pre-professional pathways, and expanded opportunities for experiential learning, including internships and undergraduate research. Van Horn also held roles as vice president of institutional advancement at two universities and director of the Independent College Fund of North Carolina. “Van Horn has a data driven results-oriented focus that is unique in higher education,” said Bill Gautreaux, chair of the Jewell Board of Trustees and a Jewell alumnus. “He has a breadth of experience in areas of heightened focus for Jewell including student outcomes, programmatic performance, athletics and the expansion of advancement operations. As we have established momentum on our Reimagine Jewell initiative raising the first $10 million of our $25 million goal while balancing our budget, his tenure will help shape our culture and build on Jewell’s long history of academic excellence and student success.” Van Horn holds a B.A. from Elon University (North Carolina) where he was named a two-time CoSIDA and GTE Academic All-American in basketball, an M.Ed. from Campbell University (North Carolina) and a Ph.D. in education from the University of South Carolina. He is a Thrivent Leadership Fellow, a member of Alpha Chi Academic Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society and the Elon University Athletic Hall of Fame. The North Carolina native also has extensive civic leadership in education and nonprofit organizations.

![]() About Grandparents for Gun Safety initiatives - The introduction of Lock It For Love To meet that need, we began Lock It For Love (LIFL), our signature program. Through Lock It For Love, we distribute thousands of free gun locks and educational materials about the safe storage of firearms. Through LIFL, we strive to have a direct impact on preventing suicides as well as accidental deaths and injuries by limiting access to firearms. |

State of the County
![]() Sheriff Will Akin has over 29 years of combined experience in the military and law enforcement. Will served in the United States Army beginning in October 1994, and he was honorably discharged in February 2003. He began his law enforcement career when he attended the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy in April 2003. As a Police Advisor in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2012, Will mentored local police to ensure law and order were maintained effectively and impartially according to the principles of policing. Will worked closely with the Department of Defense, Department of State, United Nations, and his Afghan counterparts to address issues concerning gender and human rights violations and worked toward solutions that were compatible with Afghanistan’s culture. Sheriff Will Akin joined the Clay County Sheriff’s Office upon his return from Afghanistan in January 2013 and served as commander for a variety of divisions before he was elected sheriff. He took office on January 1, 2021. Originally from California, Will has lived in many states throughout the U.S. as well as South Korea and Afghanistan. He has earned many degrees, including a doctorate in ethical leadership. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy #264, Senior Management Institute for Police #86, and National Sheriffs’ Institute #119. Will is an active member in the community as well. He serves as the Post Commander for the Liberty Memorial VFW Post #4043, is a member of the American Legion Post #95, and the Liberty Rotary Club #6040. |
