The August 11, 2011 lunch meeting re-cap

Another weekly meeting, and another opportunity for our Rotary members to enjoy fellowship, and to be provided with the information and motivation needed to increase participation in activities that serve the club, the community, and the world!

It is summer in Fort St. John, and that, in part, might attribute to the small-ish group that attended today.  However, it was great to hear stories as each member fined their table neighbor, and the dessert was fantastic!!!!  How else would we have learned of Rae's Rotarian connection with the locals on her Mexican holiday, of Wally's efforts in proposing Rotary members, of Clark's continuing building of goodwill and better friendships, or of the new endeavors about to be embarked on by both the families of John and Moira?

A note that the Rotary International Monthly Theme for August is Membership and Extensions.  Can you remember the last time you mentioned Rotary to people, other than Rotarians?  Today, I remind myself that we are all Rotary ambassadors, to promote Rotary, including all its missions and visions, as well as our fellowship and service.  Membership development and extension is essential to achieving Rotary's goals of providing community and international service.

Bruce had shared with  President Clark that the Rotary international District 5370 Conference, held in Athabasca this past June, included a presentation on methamphetamine, or METH, addiction.  This peaked my interest, because how much do we really know about the dangers of Meth, unless it has already hit close to home?  I got back to my office, and searched for info about the presentation.  One of the slides say, "Rotarians can make a difference?  Meth is now in almost every community.  So is Rotary!!!

You may remember this article from a past edition of The Rotarian:  http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/TheRotarian/Pages/Meth1008.aspx - Scary, right?  I have a son that is entering Grade 5 next month....Visit the San Juan, New Mexico Rotary Club's website, to see how those members are leading the efforts in educating others on the dangers of Meth:  http://www.dontmethwithus.com/    We will have a guest speaker in the coming weeks to share with us the dangers of Meth in our own community.

Last week's meeting, it was discussed to have a golf-themed lunch meeting this summer.  Well, save the date, Thursday, August 18th!  Meet at the Lakepoint Golf & Country clubhouse at noon for our lunch meeting, with tee-off's to follow for those that have the rest of the afternoon free.  And even if you don't have the time or inclination to golf, come for lunch with your fellow Rotarians!

Grant is heading up an afternoon of riverboating mid-September.  Stay tuned for more details....

A couple more weeks, and the Rotary Mega Lottery will be underway!  The posters and tickets are in printing stage, the Twitter profile and Facebook page set to come online, and the radio and print advertising set to start.

If you have interest in taking over the Clubrunner duties, please feel free to get in touch with me!   I will also welcome any ideas or suggestions for the content on our Club's site.

Enjoy the rest of your week!
